NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage4・5の科学系ReadやStage5のCritical Writingでは、accuracy(正確さ)・precision(精度、測定値のまとまり)・reliability(信頼性、一貫して測れるか)・validity(妥当性、調べたいものを適切に測れているか)を混同すると研究の結論を読み違えます。
Original research text: For this fictional exercise, a reference device establishes that the temperature of a stable test environment is 20.0°C. Thermometer A records 22.0, 22.0 and 22.0°C in three readings. Thermometer B records 19.0, 20.0 and 21.0°C. These are illustrative numbers, not results from actual equipment. The reference is treated as the correct value for this task. The students want to distinguish precision, which concerns how close repeated measurements are to one another, from accuracy, which concerns closeness to the reference value. Three readings are not sufficient to describe all possible performance or all future environments.
問1:Identify the reference temperature.
問2:Calculate the mean of Thermometer A’s readings.
問3:Calculate the mean of Thermometer B’s readings.
問4:Identify the thermometer whose three readings are more closely grouped.
問5:State why Thermometer A’s readings are not accurate relative to the reference.
問6:Can we conclude that Thermometer B always gives accurate readings?
問7:Calculate Thermometer B’s range.
問8:Explain why precision and accuracy are not identical.
問9:Suggest one useful next step for checking Thermometer A.
問10:Write a careful results-and-limitations statement.
Original research text: Students in a fictional classroom want to measure how long a simple device takes to complete a programmed cycle. The display on the device states that the planned duration is 30.0 seconds, but this is a target, not an independently verified reference measurement. Using the same stopwatch and procedure, Student X records 30.1, 30.0 and 30.1 seconds in three trials. Student Y measures the same type of programmed cycle under a different procedure and records 32.0, 28.0 and 31.0 seconds. The class wants to evaluate repeatability, but the two students did not use identical measurement conditions. The class also asks whether this test is suitable for judging the device’s reliability over a whole school year. Only three trials per student have been collected.
問11:Identify the stated target duration.
問12:Calculate the range of Student X’s measurements.
問13:Calculate the range of Student Y’s measurements.
問14:Which student’s readings appear more repeatable in the collected trials?
問15:Does the 30-second target prove what the true duration was?
問16:Why should the two students’ results not be treated as a controlled comparison?
問17:Calculate Student X’s average to one decimal place.
問18:Can the three trials establish the device’s reliability over one year?
問19:Propose a stronger test of long-term reliability.
問20:Write a conclusion that avoids confusing repeatability with accuracy.
Original research text: A fictional school wants to understand student satisfaction with library services. A draft survey asks only one question: ‘How many days did you visit the library last week?’ Twenty students answer. Fifteen report at least one visit, and five report no visits. In a follow-up, the same twenty students give the same answers to the same visit-frequency question. This suggests consistent responses for this narrow question, but it does not show that students are satisfied. A person can use the library often while being dissatisfied. The draft also does not ask whether students have easy access to the library or what changes they would prefer. The group has not measured satisfaction directly.
問21:Identify the research goal.
問22:What did the original survey question actually ask?
問23:How many students reported at least one visit?
問24:Calculate that share among respondents.
問25:What does the identical follow-up response suggest?
問26:Does consistency prove that the survey validly measures satisfaction?
問27:Why might a frequent visitor still be dissatisfied?
問28:Suggest a more direct satisfaction question.
問29:Identify one limit of generalizing from twenty volunteers.
問30:Write a short research-methods evaluation.
Original research text: Two students independently classify the same twenty short, anonymous comments about a fictional school’s reading area. The coding categories are ‘request for longer hours’ and ‘other’. They agree on fourteen comments but classify six comments differently. The instructions for borderline examples are vague, and the coders have not discussed a shared rule for such cases. The comments came from volunteers rather than a randomly selected sample. The team wants to improve agreement between observers and evaluate whether the coding categories capture all important issues, such as noise or accessible seating.
問31:Identify how many comments both observers classified.
問32:Identify the number of agreements.
問33:Calculate the simple observed agreement rate.
問34:Calculate the disagreement count and percentage.
問35:Explain one potential reason for disagreement.
問36:Is seventy-percent observed agreement the same as perfect inter-rater reliability?
問37:How could the team improve consistency between observers?
問38:Why might the two-category scheme have limited validity?
問39:Can the volunteer comments represent all students’ views?
問40:Write a cautious evaluation and next-step proposal.
1:The reference temperature is 20.0°C.
2:The mean of A’s readings is 22.0°C.
3:The mean of B’s readings is 20.0°C.
4:Thermometer A has the more closely grouped readings.
5:All three readings are 2.0°C above the reference.
6:No. We have only three readings in one test environment.
7:The range of B’s readings is 2.0°C.
8:A’s readings are tightly grouped but differ from the reference, while B’s mean matches the reference but its readings vary.
9:The students could check calibration against a suitable reference over more temperatures.
10:Thermometer A gave three identical readings of 22.0°C when the reference was 20.0°C. Thermometer B’s three readings averaged 20.0°C but ranged from 19.0 to 21.0°C. Thus A was more precise in this small set, whereas B’s mean was closer to the reference. More readings and calibration checks are needed before making broader claims.
11:The device’s stated target is 30.0 seconds.
12:The range is 0.1 seconds.
13:The range is 4.0 seconds.
14:Student X’s readings are more consistent within the three recorded trials.
15:No. The target was not an independently verified reference measurement.
16:They used different measurement procedures.
17:The mean is approximately 30.1 seconds to one decimal place.
18:No. Three trials do not measure performance across a year.
19:The class could repeat measurements over a longer period using the same procedure and record environmental conditions.
20:Student X’s three measurements were closely grouped, ranging from 30.0 to 30.1 seconds. Student Y’s range was larger, but the procedures differed, so the cause cannot be identified. The stated 30.0-second target is not an independently verified true value. These short trials suggest that X’s recorded measurements were more repeatable, but they do not establish absolute accuracy or the device’s long-term reliability.
21:The goal is to understand satisfaction with library services.
22:It asked about the number of days students visited the library during the previous week.
23:Fifteen of the twenty students reported at least one visit.
24:Seventy-five percent of respondents reported at least one visit.
25:It suggests consistency in answers to the visit-frequency question for these students.
26:No. Visit frequency is not the same construct as satisfaction.
27:Frequent use does not necessarily mean that services meet a student’s needs.
28:How satisfied are you with the library’s opening hours and study spaces?
29:The group cannot assume that these twenty students represent every student at the school.
30:The draft survey collected visit-frequency information from twenty students, and fifteen reported at least one visit. Their repeated responses were consistent, but this does not establish satisfaction with library services. The question measures frequency rather than satisfaction, so it may not be valid for the stated goal. The researchers should ask more direct, clearly defined satisfaction questions and recruit an appropriate sample before drawing broader conclusions.
31:Both observers classified the same twenty comments.
32:They agreed on fourteen classifications.
33:The observed agreement rate was 70 percent.
34:They disagreed on six comments, or 30 percent.
35:The coding instructions for borderline cases were vague.
36:No. Agreement was not perfect, and a simple agreement rate does not adjust for chance.
37:It could define clearer categories and test a shared coding guide.
38:It may fail to capture separate issues such as noise or accessible seating.
39:No. Volunteer comments alone do not establish the opinions of the entire school.
40:Two students independently coded twenty comments and agreed on fourteen, giving a simple observed agreement rate of 70 percent. Six comments were classified differently, possibly because the rules for borderline cases were unclear. The group should establish a more detailed coding guide and repeat the exercise. It should also review whether the categories capture issues beyond opening hours, including noise and seating access. Because the comments came from volunteers, the results should not be generalized to every student.
