NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage5の長いReadや高校英語の初見読解では、全文を同じ速さで読み続けるのではなく、目的に応じてSkimming(全体の主題を素早く把握する)とScanning(日時・数字・名称など必要な情報を探す)を使い分けることが重要です。

Original reading passage: Background. A fictional school library has thirty-six study seats. The student council wants to learn whether opening for longer periods would be useful after classes. It has not approved any permanent change.
Observations. An observer counted twenty-six occupied seats at 4 p.m. on Monday and thirty-one occupied seats at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. These were single spot checks. The school did not count different visitors or waiting times.
Proposed trial. The council suggested opening on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. for three weeks. A supervising teacher must review staffing and safe departure procedures before the trial can begin. The request for that review should be submitted by Friday at 3 p.m.
Next decision. If the school approves the trial, staff would record seat use at several times and collect voluntary comments. Only then would the school consider a longer-term timetable. The existing hours remain in place until approval is obtained.
問1:Skim the headings. What is the passage mainly about?
問2:Which section explains why no permanent change has been made?
問3:How many study seats does the library have?
問4:At what time were both seat counts taken?
問5:How many seats were occupied on Wednesday?
問6:On which days and at what times is the trial proposed?
問7:How long would the proposed trial last?
問8:When is the safety-review request due?
問9:May the school describe the extended hours as already approved?
問10:Summarise the passage in one or two precise English sentences.
Original reading passage: Event outline. A fictional school holds a science fair on Saturday for registered students. Doors open at 9:10 a.m. and the programme finishes at 12:30 p.m. The following programme is a plan, not an account of an event that has already happened.
Session timetable. A short welcome begins at 9:30 a.m. A demonstration of water filtration starts at 10:15 a.m. After a break at 11:00 a.m., participants can join a poster discussion beginning at 11:20 a.m. A feedback form opens at 12:05 p.m.
Participation. Thirty-five people registered, but the organisers expect about twenty-eight to attend. This is an estimate, not a measured final attendance. Anyone needing accessibility arrangements should contact the office by Thursday at 5:00 p.m. The programme may change if a safety issue arises.
Reporting. Staff will record the actual number of participants after the event and will distinguish registrations from attendance in the report.
問11:Skim the sections. What kind of document is this?
問12:Does the text describe a completed event?
問13:On which day does the fair take place?
問14:When do the doors open?
問15:When does the water-filtration demonstration begin?
問16:What activity begins at 11:20 a.m.?
問17:When can participants start giving feedback?
問18:How many registrations have been recorded?
問19:Is twenty-eight an actual attendance count?
問20:Write a short timetable summary with the support deadline.
Original reading passage: Purpose. A fictional student committee asked how respondents normally travelled to school. It invited ninety students to complete a voluntary online form.
Responses. Sixty students responded. Thirty selected bus, eighteen selected bicycle and twelve selected walking as their main mode of travel. Each respondent selected only one option. The committee did not record the preferences of the thirty nonrespondents.
Interpretation. Half of the sixty respondents chose bus travel. This does not show that half of all ninety invited students took the bus. Nor does it tell the school how long individual journeys took, because travel time was not measured.
Next step. Before recommending changes to transport schedules, the committee wants to ask a broader range of students and collect information on travel times and access needs. It will not treat this small voluntary survey as a complete picture of the school.
問21:What is the main purpose of the passage?
問22:Which section should be scanned for exact counts?
問23:How many students were invited?
問24:How many students responded?
問25:How many respondents selected bicycle?
問26:How many respondents selected walking?
問27:What proportion of respondents selected bus?
問28:What was the response rate among the invitees?
問29:Does the survey measure how long each journey took?
問30:Give a balanced one-sentence summary.
Original reading passage: Record. In a fictional building, staff recorded 480 kilowatt-hours of electricity use in Week 1, 450 in Week 2 and 470 in Week 3. The measurement covers whole-building electricity use, not lighting alone.
Changes. A reminder to switch off unused lights was introduced at the beginning of Week 2. In Week 3, outdoor temperatures and room use differed from the previous week. No separate measurements of lighting energy or operating hours are available.
Reading the figures. The total dropped by 30 kilowatt-hours between Weeks 1 and 2, then increased by 20 between Weeks 2 and 3. These changes occurred near the reminder, but the data do not identify the reminder’s independent effect.
Future measurements. Staff plan to record room schedules and weather alongside electricity use before assessing whether the reminder is useful. The school has not calculated any financial savings.
問31:Skim the headings. What does the passage mainly discuss?
問32:Which section explains why causation is uncertain?
問33:What was recorded in Week 1?
問34:What was the Week 2 value?
問35:What was the Week 3 value?
問36:When did the reminder begin?
問37:Calculate the reduction from Week 1 to Week 2.
問38:Calculate the change from Week 2 to Week 3.
問39:Can these data isolate how much electricity the lighting reminder saved?
問40:Write a precise two-sentence summary.

40:Building electricity use fell from 480 to 450 kilowatt-hours and then rose to 470 over three weeks. Although a lighting reminder started in Week 2, changing weather and room use and the lack of lighting-only data prevent attributing the changes to the reminder alone.
