NEW TREASURE Stage3の仮定法と英作文で『It’s time we went home.』を見たとき、wentを『帰った』と訳すのは誤読です。この過去形は、いま・これから『もう帰るべき時期だ』という判断を表します。一方、It’s time to go home.は『帰る時間です』、It’s time for us to go home.は『私たちが帰る時間です』。慶英会は、通常の時刻・行動の提案・行動が遅れている含みを独自40問・初見Read2題・全訳・全解説にまとめました。

British CouncilのUnreal timeは、It’s (high) time＋主語＋過去形を『本来もっと早く実行すべきだったことを、今やるべきだと述べる』表現として解説しています。British Council｜Unreal time。過去形でも過去の出来事を報告しているとは限りません。
to不定詞と過去形の意味の差

学校の英文法の問題では、『for us to go』を『for we to go』と書いたり、It’s time we go …を基本形として過去形を忘れたりしやすいため、動詞の位置を確認します。ただし、実際の英語ではIt’s time we goのような現在形が見られる用例もあり、あらゆる文脈で一律に誤文だと断定しないことが重要です。本教材は学校で基本となる過去形を中心に練習します。

I wish I were more careful.は現実についての願い、I’d rather you didn’t use that file.は相手にそうしないでほしいという希望、It’s time you checked the file.は行動すべき時期という判断です。すべて過去形が現在に関わる意味を持つ場合がありますが、願望・好み・適切な時期の役割を混同しないでください。
