- however・although・instead of・provided thatを見つけ、結論や条件がどこで変わるかを確かめる。
The student council at a junior high school wanted to make its after-school study sessions more useful. In September, twenty-four students joined a trial program. At first, anyone could ask a volunteer for help, but the volunteers often spent a long time answering questions that had not been prepared. After two weeks, a teacher suggested a change. Students would write one question on a card before the session, and volunteers would organize the cards by topic. The first week had attracted only eight students, while the fourth week attracted eighteen. Some council members claimed that the question cards were the reason for the increase. However, the school had also announced the program more widely during the third week, so the cause was uncertain. The council collected feedback from fifteen students who attended the final session. Eleven said the cards helped them ask clearer questions, three noticed no difference, and one preferred speaking without a card. The council decided to keep the cards optional. Next term, the teacher plans to compare attendance during weeks with similar announcements and to ask students who never attend why they stay away. The goal is not simply to increase attendance but to provide useful support to students with different needs.

A school history club found an old photograph showing students beside a wooden building. A handwritten note on the back said, "Library opening, 1965." Several members wanted to put the photograph on their website immediately. The club adviser asked them to check what the note actually proved. The photo had been donated by a former student, but the school did not know who had written the note or when it was added. The students searched old newsletters and discovered an article announcing that a new library would open in October 1966. One student argued that the handwritten date must be wrong. Another pointed out that the photograph might show a smaller library that had existed before the new building was completed. Neither explanation had yet been confirmed. The club contacted the former student who had donated the photo. She remembered attending an event near the building but could not identify its exact date. The club therefore wrote a caption explaining that the photograph was probably taken in the mid-1960s and that the purpose of the event was uncertain. Before publishing, it also checked that the donor agreed to the image being displayed online. The club hoped visitors would learn not only about school history but also about the difference between evidence and an attractive story.

The sports committee had planned a running event in the schoolyard for Saturday morning. On Thursday afternoon, the weather forecast showed a high chance of heavy rain. The committee discussed three possible actions: canceling the event, moving it indoors, or postponing it until the following weekend. The gym could hold only half of the registered runners at one time, so holding exactly the same program indoors was not possible. After speaking with the teachers, the committee chose a shorter indoor event with two separate sessions. Students whose surnames began with A through M were asked to attend the first session at nine, while the others were assigned to the second session at eleven. Each runner had to arrive twenty minutes before their session to register. Parents could watch from marked seats, but they were not allowed to stand near the running area. On Friday morning, a message explaining the new plan was sent to all registered families. A second notice corrected the room number printed in the first message; the starting times did not change. By Friday evening, every family had received the corrected notice, although the committee could not know whether everyone had read it. Volunteers were placed at the school entrance on Saturday to guide visitors who had missed the correction.

A science class tested whether different types of paper could keep small ice cubes cold. Each group placed an ice cube inside a paper container and measured the amount of melted water after fifteen minutes. Group A used thick paper and collected nine milliliters of water. Group B used thin paper and collected thirteen milliliters. The students initially concluded that thick paper was always the best material. Their teacher pointed out two problems. First, the paper containers were not exactly the same size. Second, the amount of ice was estimated rather than measured before the experiment. The students could truthfully report that Group A had collected less water in this particular trial, but they could not identify paper thickness as the only cause. The next day, they repeated the experiment with containers of equal size and ice cubes of equal mass. The new results were closer together: ten milliliters for Group A and eleven for Group B. Instead of hiding the second result, the class displayed both sets of figures during the science fair. Visitors were asked to suggest further tests. Some recommended repeating the experiment more times, while others proposed measuring the temperature of the room. The class learned that a good science presentation explains what the data show and what they do not show.
