A student council wanted to reduce the number of disposable containers used during lunch. On the first Monday, one hundred students bought lunch, and forty chose reusable containers. The other sixty used disposable ones. On the following Monday, the cafeteria offered a small discount to students who brought reusable containers. Ninety students bought lunch that day; fifty-five chose reusable containers, and thirty-five chose disposable ones. One student said that the discount had certainly caused the change. Another reminded the council that the menu, weather, and total number of customers had also differed between the two days. The council had not measured the weight of waste produced on either day. Its members therefore could describe changes in the number and share of reusable containers, but they could not state how many kilograms of waste had been saved. They planned a four-week test in which the same types of data would be collected on several days. They also wanted to ask students who did not use reusable containers whether washing facilities or carrying a container caused difficulties. The council’s goal was to make a practical change that students could continue, not simply report an impressive number after one day.

  1. Q1:One hundred students.

The astronomy club at a fictional school planned two observation sessions for visiting students. The first was held on a clear Friday, when twelve visitors used Telescope A and eight were able to identify a particular star cluster. The second session took place on a cloudy Saturday. Ten visitors used Telescope B, and four identified the same cluster. A club member said Telescope A must be twice as good because twice as many visitors had found the cluster. The teacher explained that the weather had been different, the number of visitors had not been equal, and success depended partly on whether students knew where to look. The club had not used both telescopes under the same conditions. It was therefore impossible to compare their performance fairly from these two sessions alone. For the next trial, the members planned to let the same visitors use both telescopes on the same night and record their experience before showing the answers. A student asked whether the cloudy session had been a failure. The leader replied that learning which parts of the plan needed improvement was itself useful. She suggested that observations should be reported with their conditions rather than described by a single success rate.

Mina was helping a museum create a display about an old fountain in the town square. A letter written in 1975 said that the fountain was repaired that year. A newspaper report from 1995 said that the same fountain was moved from the square to a park. Mina initially wrote that the two sources disagreed about where the fountain had been in 1975. Her friend Kento pointed out that the events had taken place twenty years apart. The first source described repairs to the fountain while it stood in the square; the second described a later move to a different place. Both records could be true. The museum also owned a photograph that had been taken after the move, but the date was not written on the back. Mina wanted to use the picture to prove the exact year of the move. Kento said the image could show the fountain’s location, but it could not establish a year that was not recorded. The curator advised them to use the dated newspaper report for the year and the photograph only as a visual illustration. When the display opened, visitors could read a short timeline explaining why the fountain had first been repaired and later relocated. Mina learned to identify what each source could actually prove before joining facts into a story.

A student committee discussed whether the school library should spend more of its budget on e-books. Supporters argued that students could borrow an e-book without carrying a heavy printed volume. They also said that one digital catalog might make it easier to search for information. Other students were concerned about screen access and the cost of keeping devices in working condition. Some families did not have a suitable device at home, while other students preferred printed pages for long reading assignments. The librarian explained that buying digital licenses did not automatically mean the library could lend the same title to an unlimited number of readers at once. License conditions would have to be checked. The committee decided to test a small collection of e-books while keeping printed copies available. It planned to record both actual borrowing and unsuccessful requests, not just the number of titles purchased. It would ask students who used neither format whether the library’s opening hours or search system had caused difficulty. The chairperson concluded that the goal was reliable access to reading materials rather than choosing one format because it seemed modern. She also noted that the school should compare long-term costs instead of looking only at the price of the first purchase.
