特にnot necessarily、may、might、every、onlyといった語が、主張の範囲をどう変えるかに注目します。
At a fictional junior high school, the library extended its Friday opening time by one hour. During the week before the change, the library recorded 120 visits and 35 book loans. In the first week after the change, it recorded 160 visits and 47 loans. A student wrote that the longer opening time had caused exactly forty additional people to visit. The librarian explained that visits did not necessarily mean different people: a student could enter more than once. She also noted that a reading campaign had begun on the same day as the new schedule. Neither the effect of the campaign nor the effect of the extra hour had been measured separately. On the second Friday after the change, heavy rain made travel difficult, and the library recorded fewer visits than on the first Friday. This single day did not prove the extra hour was useless, but it did contradict the claim that visits would increase on every Friday. The student council planned to compare several weeks, record when visits occurred, and ask students whether the new hour helped them borrow books. The aim was to identify a useful arrangement rather than defend a conclusion that the evidence did not support.

- Q1:There were 120 visits.
- Q2:There were 160 visits.
- Q3:They increased by forty visits.
- Q4:Thirty-five loans.
- Q5:Forty-seven loans.
- Q6:A reading campaign began.
- Q7:No. The effects were not measured separately.
- Q8:Heavy rain made travel difficult.
- Q9:It challenged the claim that visits would increase on every Friday.
- Q10:It planned to record visit times and ask whether the extra hour helped students borrow books.
The safety committee at another fictional school changed the instructions for an evacuation practice. Before the change, 30 students answered a short quiz, and 18 correctly identified the nearest safe exit. After the instructions were rewritten, 30 students took a similar quiz, and 25 answered correctly. The committee was pleased, but one member announced that every student now knew the correct route. A teacher pointed out that five students in the second group had still answered incorrectly. The teacher also warned that the two sets of students were not necessarily the same individuals. The committee had used two different quiz versions, so it could not assume that the difficulty was exactly equal. A second practice showed another limitation: while many students knew the route on paper, some hesitated when a corridor was closed for maintenance. The committee therefore decided to add practice with alternative routes and to check each group’s progress over time. It would also invite students who found the instructions difficult to explain which parts were confusing. The improved score was encouraging evidence, but it was not proof that every student could evacuate safely in every situation.

- Q18:Two different quiz versions were used.
- Q19:Some students hesitated about which route to take.
- Q20:It planned practice with alternative evacuation routes.
A science class planted 20 seedlings of one kind in identical pots. Ten were placed near a sunny window, and ten were placed in a shaded corner. At the end of three weeks, the sunny group had an average height of 18 centimeters and the shaded group had an average of 15. A student argued that a sunnier position always made every individual plant taller. However, the records showed that one shaded plant was 19 centimeters tall, while one sunny plant was only 14. These two plants did not eliminate the difference between the group averages, but they showed that the strongest claim about every individual plant was false. The students also had not recorded exactly how much water each pot received. The teacher asked the class to distinguish three statements: the observed average difference, the untested idea that sunlight alone caused it, and the stronger claim that every sunny plant grew taller than every shaded plant. In a new trial, the students planned to use equal measured amounts of water and rotate positions. They did not promise that the next results would match the first ones.
- Q21. How many seedlings were used in total?
- Q22. How many were placed near the window?
- Q23. How long did the first experiment last?
- Q24. What was the average height of the sunny group?
- Q25. What was the average height of the shaded group?
- Q26. What was the difference between the averages?
- Q27. How tall was one of the shaded plants mentioned as a counterexample?
- Q28. How tall was one of the sunny plants mentioned?
- Q29. Did those individual plants disprove the difference between the group averages?
- Q30. What condition would be controlled more carefully in the next trial?
- Q21:Twenty seedlings.
- Q22:Ten seedlings.

- Q27:Nineteen centimeters.
- Q28:Fourteen centimeters.
- Q29:No. They challenged the claim about every individual plant, not the recorded averages.
- Q30:The amount of water given to each plant.

The festival committee wrote a visitor guide in Japanese, English, and Chinese. After the first draft was printed, the teacher changed the location of a music performance from Room A to the gym, while keeping the starting time at 2:30 p.m. The Japanese version was corrected immediately. The English version was corrected the following morning, but the Chinese version still contained the old room when a volunteer checked it. A student argued that because the Japanese guide was accurate, the school’s information was now accurate for everyone. Another student pointed out that visitors who relied on the Chinese guide could still go to the wrong place. The committee corrected that version and placed volunteers near Room A to redirect anyone carrying an older sheet. It also added an update date and one official website address to every language version. During the event, 18 visitors asked volunteers for directions, but the committee did not record which language each person had used. It could not therefore say that a particular translation had caused those requests. The committee concluded that publishing one correct version was not the same as providing all visitors with consistent, current information.
