次に、something that …なら名詞、to do … 似た単語でもreliable(信頼できる)とaccurate(正確な)、claim(主張)とevidence(証拠)を区別してください。

a person / a thing / information that …
to do / to make / to check …
able to / connected with / enough …
as a result / without checking …

At Aoba Junior High School, a student team wanted to reduce food waste. During the first five lunch periods, the team counted an average of 25 uneaten bread rolls each day. The students then sent a short survey to 80 classmates. Sixty students responded, and 42 of those respondents said that the standard portion was sometimes too large. The team suggested offering a smaller portion as an option. For the next two weeks, the cafeteria offered both sizes. The team later recorded an average of 15 uneaten rolls per day. However, the number of students having school lunch also changed during the trial. The team therefore wrote, ‘The new option may have helped, but the available data do not prove that it was the only cause of the decline.’ They recommended collecting data for a longer period.

Q41. How many students responded to the survey?

60 students.

Q42. What proportion of respondents said the portion was sometimes too large?

42 out of 60, or 70%.

Q43. How did the average number of uneaten rolls change?

It fell from 25 to 15 per day, a decrease of 10.

Q44. Did the team prove that the smaller portions alone caused the change?

No. The number of students eating school lunch also changed.

A small museum wanted to make its exhibitions easier to understand for visitors from abroad. Volunteers wrote short explanations in English and placed them next to three exhibits. On Saturday, 30 visitors received a printed map with the explanations. On Sunday, another 30 visitors were offered a phone-based guide with the same information. Eighteen visitors on Saturday and 23 on Sunday said that the explanations were useful. The organizers considered the results encouraging, but they did not conclude that the phone-based guide was better. The visitors came on different days, and the groups might have had different needs. In their final report, the volunteers distinguished a fact (’23 people said the guide was useful’) from an interpretation (‘phones are always better than paper’). They also proposed adding larger text to both versions so that more visitors could use them comfortably.

Q45. How many people were offered the phone-based guide?

30 people.

Q46. How many more visitors said the guide was useful on Sunday than on Saturday?

Five more visitors.

Q47. Why was a strong conclusion about the two formats not justified?

The groups visited on different days and may have had different needs.

Q48. Which is a reported fact: ’23 people found the guide useful’ or ‘phones are always better’?

23 people found the guide useful.’
