1.A Small Market for School Supplies(158

At Riverbank School, students found many unused notebooks and pencils in their classroom cabinets. They asked their teachers if they could organize a small market during the school festival. The teachers agreed, but they told the students that every item had to be clean and safe to use. The students spent a week checking the supplies and making clear price labels.

On the festival day, visitors could take some supplies for free, while other items were sold at low prices. A student named Haru kept a record of how many items were taken or sold. More than sixty notebooks were reused. However, Haru did not know whether everyone who received a notebook would actually use it. The students decided to ask for feedback before organizing another market.

The group learned that reusing supplies was not only about collecting things. It also required clear rules, careful checking, and a way to understand what happened after an item was shared.

  • Q1. What did students find?
  • Q2. Where did they want to hold the market?
  • Q3. What condition did the teachers set?
  • Q4. What did Haru record?
  • Q5. How many notebooks were reused?
  • Q6. Did the group know if all notebooks would be used?

2.A Safer Route on Rainy Days(178

Students at Green Valley School noticed that a narrow path beside the station became slippery after heavy rain. Some students used it because it was the shortest way to school. A teacher asked a small team to compare two routes and prepare a guide showing where the safer path was. The team walked both routes with an adult and noted the places where people needed to be careful.

The shorter route took eight minutes on a dry day, while the other route took twelve minutes. The team did not test how long either route took in heavy rain because it was not safe to do so. Instead, they marked the locations of steps, road crossings, and covered areas. They also told students to follow the school’s current safety advice rather than rely on their guide alone.

When the map was shared, several students said it was easier to understand the route choices. The team planned to review the map every term. They did not say that the map had reduced accidents, because no such data had been collected.

  • Q13. What problem did students notice?
  • Q14. Why did some students use the narrow path?
  • Q15. Who accompanied the team when they checked the routes?
  • Q16. How long did the two routes take on a dry day?
  • Q17. Did they test the routes in heavy rain?
  • Q18. Did the team prove that accidents decreased?

3.Three Sentences about a Book(163

At Maple City Library, a volunteer group wanted children to discover books they had never opened. The volunteers asked students to write short recommendation cards. Each card needed three sentences: what the book was about, what made it interesting, and who might enjoy reading it. The group explained that the cards were personal opinions, not official reviews.

At first, many children wrote only, ‘This book is good.’ A librarian showed them how to give a clear reason. For example, instead of writing, ‘It is fun,’ a student could say, ‘The ending surprised me because the main character made a brave decision.’ The librarian also reminded children not to reveal important surprises at the end of a story.

After a month, the volunteers collected forty cards. Some visitors said that the cards helped them choose books. However, the library did not measure how many books were borrowed because of the cards. The volunteers planned to improve the examples and check the cards for mistakes.

  • Q25. Who organized the recommendation-card activity?
  • Q26. How many sentences did each card need?
  • Q27. What three types of information did each card include?
  • Q28. Why was ‘This book is good’ insufficient?
  • Q29. How many cards were collected after a month?
  • Q30. Did the library measure additional book borrowing?

Students found unused supplies.

More than sixty notebooks were reused.

was established→started、received feedback→asked people what they thoughtなど、意味を保つ別表現で進めます。

Stage 2
