- Who?/What?/Where?/When?:質問の疑問詞が人・物・場所・時点のどれを求めるか先に確定。
- Why?/How?:because+文、so that+文、by+動名詞などから自然な言い方を選ぶ。
- Did …?
- How many …?/How often …?:
初見英文① A Second Life for Umbrellas(285語)
On a rainy Monday, Aya saw a box of damaged umbrellas outside a neighborhood shop. The shop owner, Mr. Mori, told her that people often bought a new umbrella when just one small part was broken. Aya thought that some of the umbrellas could be repaired instead of being thrown away. She asked her science teacher, Ms. Kimura, for help. The teacher agreed to start a repair workshop, but only if the students checked that every repaired umbrella was safe to use.
Six students came to the first workshop. Mr. Mori showed them how to check the ribs, handles, and fabric. After two hours, they had repaired fourteen umbrellas. Some were given back to their owners, while others were offered to students who needed one. However, three umbrellas were too badly damaged to be used again. The team separated the metal parts from the fabric so that the materials could be recycled.
During the next five Saturdays, the team repaired seventy more umbrellas. They had kept a simple record since their first meeting, so they could explain which repairs were most common. Aya found that broken ribs were a more frequent problem than torn fabric. When the team ran out of spare ribs, they asked Mr. Mori if he could donate some. He agreed after seeing their records and hearing their plan.
The workshop is now held once a month. Younger students have joined, and Aya has been teaching them how to examine damaged umbrellas. The students do not promise to repair every umbrella. Instead, they explain that reusing an item is a good choice only when it can be made safe. Aya hopes other schools will try similar projects and share what they learn.

初見英文② History on the School Wall(293語)
At River Town School, Kenta noticed that very few younger children visited the small history museum near the station. He interviewed twelve families. Seven said they did not know what the museum displayed, and three said the written explanations were difficult for young children. The remaining two families had visited recently. Kenta shared the results with his classmates, and they decided to prepare a small exhibition at school before inviting families to the museum.
The museum offered photographs of objects from its collection, but it did not lend the original objects. The students chose six photographs and wrote short labels in Japanese and English. Their first labels were too long. A teacher asked them to cut each one to two short sentences and use words that younger children could understand. The students also placed the photographs lower on the wall so that small visitors could see them easily.
On the first Saturday, forty visitors came to the school exhibition. Eighteen were children under twelve. Each visitor received a small card with three questions, such as ‘What was this tool used for?’ Volunteers encouraged children to search the labels rather than telling them the answers immediately. At the end, visitors placed their cards in a box and wrote one thing they had learned.
Several visitors said that the text was still too small. Before the second opening, the team made the letters larger and added a short glossary. They also prepared a map showing the route from the school to the museum. Since then, museum staff have welcomed more questions from local families, although the students have not measured whether museum visits have increased. Kenta says the project was successful because it helped people become curious, not because it proved that attendance had risen.
- Q13. How many families did Kenta interview?
- Q14. How many of those families did not know what the museum displayed?
- Q15. Why did some families find the museum difficult for younger children?
- Q16. Did the museum lend its original objects to the school?
- Q17. How many photographs did the students choose?
- Q18. How did the students improve their long labels?
- Q19. Why were the photographs placed lower on the wall?
- Q20. How many visitors came on the first Saturday?
- Q21. What did the volunteers want children to do before getting the answers?
- Q22. What changes did the team make before the second opening?
- Q23. Have the students measured whether visits to the museum increased?
- Q24. Why did Kenta call the project successful?

Whyの答えでbecauseとso thatを混同しない
Why did the team separate the materials? They separated the materials so that they could be recycled. 単にThey separated them.
How many more umbrellas were repaired during the next five Saturdays?
Did the museum lend original objects? に対しては No, it did not. Have the students measured …? なら No, they have not.

Stage 2
