The club wanted to test whether …

大切な英語表現は suggest(示唆する)、may/might(可能性)、cannot prove(証明できない)、repeat the test(再実験する)、keep conditions similar(条件をそろえる) です。

The science club wanted to find out whether a watering schedule affected the growth of bean plants. In a small trial, Plot A received four liters of water on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Plot B received six liters on Monday and six liters on Thursday. Each plot received twelve liters each week. Both groups used the same kind of beans and similar soil. After three weeks, the plants in Plot A had grown by an average of ten centimeters, while those in Plot B had grown by twelve centimeters. Some members said that watering twice a week must be better. However, the afternoon sunlight was stronger in Plot B. The students had not kept that condition the same, so they could not tell whether the difference came from the schedule, the sunlight or both. The club leader suggested using six plots in a new trial. Three plots would follow one schedule and three would follow the other. The students would place the plots so that the sunlight was similar, measure the amount of water carefully and record the plants’ growth every week. No new test had started yet.

A group of students wanted to compare air temperatures in the sunny courtyard and near the trees. On Monday, one student took a courtyard reading at 3:00 p.m. and another took a reading under the trees at 3:30 p.m. The courtyard thermometer showed 29 degrees Celsius, and the tree-area thermometer showed 25 degrees. The difference was four degrees, but the students had not measured the two places at the same time. Clouds moved across the sky between the readings. On Tuesday, they measured both places at exactly 3:00 p.m. The courtyard reading was 27 degrees and the tree-area reading was 26 degrees. The students noticed that the difference varied from day to day. They did not conclude that every shaded space would always be four degrees cooler. They decided to repeat both measurements at the same time for four more weeks and to record weather conditions. They also planned to use the same type of thermometer in both places. This would make the comparison more consistent, although the group still needed enough readings to understand the pattern.

  1. Q11. What two places did the students compare?
  2. Q12. What time was the courtyard measured on Monday?
  3. Q13. What time was the tree area measured on Monday?
  4. Q14. What were Monday’s two readings?
  5. Q15. Why was Monday’s comparison limited?
  6. Q16. What time were both locations measured on Tuesday?
  7. Q17. How large was Tuesday’s temperature difference?
  8. Q18. Did the group prove shade always reduced temperature by four degrees?
  9. Q19. What would the students change in their next measurements?
  10. Q20. What is one reasonable conclusion from the observations?

  1. Q11. The sunny courtyard and the area near the trees. —
  4. Q14. 29°C in the courtyard and 25°C near the trees. —
  5. Q15. The readings were taken at different times while the clouds changed. —
  7. Q17. One degree Celsius. — 27−26=1℃。

The technology club tested whether a thick cloth could reduce the sound of a bell inside a box. In the first test, the students used a thin cloth and placed the microphone one meter from the box. In the second test, they used a thick cloth, but the microphone was only half a meter from the box. The recorded sound level was 68 decibels in the first test and 66 decibels in the second. A few students said that the thick cloth must work better. However, the teacher pointed out that the microphone distance had changed. The second reading was taken closer to the bell, so the data could not separate the effect of the cloth from the effect of the microphone position. A passing train was also audible during the second recording. The club decided to repeat the comparison with the microphone fixed at the same distance, the same bell and the same room. It would measure several times and report an average. The club had not yet completed that repeat test and did not know whether one cloth would reduce sound more reliably than the other.

  1. Q21. What did the club want to test?
  2. Q22. What kind of cloth was used in the first test?
  3. Q23. How far was the microphone from the box in the first test?
  4. Q24. How far was it in the second test?
  5. Q25. Which test had the lower recorded sound level?
  6. Q26. What was the difference between the two recorded values?
  7. Q27. Why was the comparison not fair enough to prove a cloth effect?
  8. Q28. What other source of noise was present in the second test?
  9. Q29. What would be kept the same in the repeat test?
  10. Q30. What is a cautious conclusion about the thick cloth?

  1. Q21. Whether thick cloth reduced the sound of a bell. —
  2. Q22. A thin cloth. —
  3. Q23. One meter.
  4. Q24. Half a meter.
  5. Q25. The second test.
  6. Q26. Two decibels. — 68−66=2dB。
  7. Q27. The microphone distance was different. —
  8. Q28. A passing train. —
  9. Q29. The microphone distance, bell and room. —
  10. Q30. The thick cloth was linked to a lower reading in this trial, but its effect was not proved. —

The student council wanted to know whether a revised school map helped newcomers find classrooms faster. The old map used long written directions. The revised map used shorter sentences and clearer room numbers. Ten students tested the old map, and their average time to find the music room was 72 seconds. Ten different students tested the revised map, and their average time was 58 seconds. The revised-map group therefore had a lower average time by 14 seconds. However, the two groups were different: eight students in the second group had already visited the school before, while only two in the first group had done so. The student council realized that earlier experience could help people find rooms faster. It could not conclude that the map alone caused the difference. The committee proposed asking a new group of visitors to test both maps, keeping their starting point and instructions the same. It would also ask which parts of the maps were confusing. Members planned to protect participants’ privacy and not publish individual names or photographs. They believed the results might help improve the signs but did not claim the new design would work perfectly for everyone.

  1. Q31. What was the council comparing?
  2. Q32. How many students tested each map?
  3. Q33. What was the average time with the old map?
  4. Q34. What was the average time with the revised map?
  5. Q35. How much faster was the second group’s average time?
  6. Q36. How many students had visited before in the revised-map group?
  7. Q37. How many had visited before in the old-map group?
  8. Q38. Why could the faster average not be attributed to the map alone?
  9. Q39. What did the council propose to compare more fairly?
  10. Q40. What claim should be avoided?

  1. Q31. An old school map and a revised map. —
  2. Q32. Ten students. —
  3. Q33. 72 seconds.
  4. Q34. 58 seconds.
  5. Q35. 14 seconds.
  6. Q36. Eight.
  7. Q37. Two.
  8. Q38. The groups had different levels of prior experience. —
  9. Q39. Have a new group test both maps under the same starting conditions. —
  10. Q40. The revised map has been proved to work perfectly for every visitor. —

  • 可能性を証明と取り違え:might reduceはmay/mightの意味であり、proved to reduceではない。

We observed …, but we cannot conclude … because …
