結論｜instead・instead of・rather thanの違い
- instead（副詞）：We walked instead.（代わりに歩いた）。文頭Instead, … や文末に置く。
- instead of＋名詞・動名詞：We walked instead of taking the bus.（バスに乗る代わりに歩いた）。instead of takeは不可。
- rather than：We chose to walk rather than take a taxi.（タクシーより歩くことを選んだ）。動詞の原形・-ingなどが続く。
- would rather A than B：I’d rather stay than leave.（帰るより残りたい）。would ratherの後は動詞原形。
『Instead of taking the bus, we walked.』と『Rather than take the bus, we walked.』はいずれもバス以外を選んだことを示しますが、後続の動詞形が同じとは限りません。『We walked instead.』では前後の文脈がないと何の代わりか分からないことがあります。

独自英文：At Hillview School, the student council wanted to improve the reading corner. At first, members suggested buying ten new chairs. However, a teacher explained that six old chairs were safe and could be repaired. Instead of buying new chairs, the council decided to repair the six old ones and use the remaining money for books. It also chose to keep the shelves rather than replace them because they were still strong. Four volunteers repaired the chairs after school. Rather than open the corner immediately, the council asked eight classmates to test the seating. Six said the chairs felt more comfortable, while two preferred the old arrangement. The council moved a table and added clearer labels instead. It did not claim that reading ability had improved, because no reading test had been conducted. The head teacher agreed to open the corner on Monday, but the number of future visitors was still unknown.

insteadは文頭・文末のどちらに使いますか？
どちらも可能です。文頭ではInstead, we walked.、文末ではWe walked instead.のように使います。
