prefer／would ratherを一度に比較
- I prefer tea to coffee.（コーヒーより紅茶が好き）。名詞AとBを比較。
- I prefer reading to watching TV.（テレビより読書が好き）。動名詞AとBを比較。
- I prefer to read before bed.（寝る前に読書するのを好む）。不定詞を使って一つの好みを述べる。
- I’d rather read than watch TV.（テレビを見るより読書したい）。would rather＋原形＋than＋原形。
- I’d rather not go out today.（今日は外出したくない）。would rather not＋原形。
prefer reading to watchingのtoは不定詞ではない
I prefer reading to watching. のtoの後ろはwatchingです。これは比較に使う前置詞toだからです。一方、I prefer to read.はto不定詞で、toの後ろは動詞原形readです。toという綴りだけを見て後ろを必ず原形にするのは誤りです。
would ratherは’dに注意
I’d rather stay.の’dはこの表現ではwouldの省略です。had betterの’dとは異なります。Would you rather read or listen?のように好みを尋ねることもできます。原則としてwould ratherの後ろは原形であり、to不定詞を置きません。
好みを客観的な成績向上の証明と混同しない
「私は静かな場所で読むのが好き」と「静かな場所で全員の成績が必ず上がる」は違う主張です。I prefer … because … は個人の理由として自然ですが、全員の学習効果を述べるには適切な測定が必要です。Actionの英作文では事実・感想・推測を区別してください。

At a fictional middle school, students planned an English presentation about the kinds of study activities they enjoyed. Hana preferred reading short articles to watching long videos. Ken preferred to work in small groups because he liked discussing questions with friends. Yui said, ‘I’d rather practise speaking than write another long paragraph today.’ The teacher reminded them that these were personal preferences, not universal facts. The group prepared a simple questionnaire. It asked students which learning activity they preferred, but the teacher warned the group not to assume that every student would answer in the same way. They decided to give respondents a choice of several activities and an option to write their own answer. The questionnaire was fictional training material and was not used to collect private student data. During rehearsal, Ken wrote, ‘I prefer studying than listening.’ Hana corrected it to ‘I prefer studying to listening.’ Another student wrote, ‘I would rather to wait,’ and the teacher changed it to ‘I would rather wait.’ The group noticed that to in ‘prefer doing A to doing B’ was a preposition, but to in ‘prefer to do’ was part of an infinitive.
