②理由・結果をつなぐ:so、because、however、instead、in order to の役割を読む。

Small Pieces of Plastic on a Beach
A group of students wanted to learn why very small pieces of plastic were found on a nearby beach. They began by collecting rubbish from two areas. One area was close to a busy road; the other was farther away, near a forest.
The students expected to find more pieces near the road. (1), they counted almost the same number in both areas. They were surprised and decided not to draw a conclusion immediately.
Their teacher explained that ocean currents and weather might move plastic from one place to another. He asked them to record the wind direction and the time of collection (2) they could compare their results more fairly.
For a second study, the group visited the same beach three times over one month. They did not pick up anything dangerous. Instead, they took photographs and counted only visible pieces in marked areas.

Learning from Old Photographs
Students in a history club wanted to create an exhibition about how transportation had changed in their town. They interviewed a retired bus driver who remembered the opening of a bridge. He believed it opened in 1978.
The students found an old photograph of the bridge, but there was no date printed on it. One student suggested using the driver’s memory as the date. (1), another student argued that they needed written evidence before publishing the year.
They went to a public archive and found newspaper articles from the late 1970s. An article (2) in 1979 explained that the bridge had officially opened that spring. The students were careful to distinguish the opening of the bridge from the beginning of construction.
Their teacher suggested keeping the interview because it described daily life, (3) using the newspaper to support the exact date. Both types of sources could be useful for different purposes.
The exhibition included a map showing how travel routes changed after the bridge opened. It also included a note (4) visitors that personal memories may contain mistakes.

Subject: Changes to the Saturday Reading Workshop
Dear Student Volunteers,
Thank you for joining our reading workshop for younger children. We expect forty children, who will work in groups of five. Each group will be supported by two older student volunteers.
The workshop was originally planned for the small library room at 9:00 a.m. However, that room cannot hold all the groups, so we will use the community hall and begin at 9:30. Volunteers must arrive by 9:10 to prepare books and desks.
The first activity will be a short story reading. After each story, children will answer questions about characters, places, and reasons. The questions should be simple enough for everyone to try. We want students to enjoy explaining their ideas, not just guessing answers.
At noon, children will have lunch. The organizers will provide lunch for volunteers, but children must bring their own. Everyone should bring water. If any child has a food allergy, the family should contact us by Tuesday.
After lunch, the groups will create one picture poster about a favorite story. The workshop will finish at 2:30 p.m.
If you cannot volunteer, please let us know by Thursday evening so that we can find a replacement. On Friday, we will email you the reading materials.
Best wishes,
Workshop Team

A Science Club’s Garden Study
A science club wanted to find out whether giving vegetable plants more sunlight would help them grow faster. The students planted the same kind of seeds in three groups of pots. Group A received about eight hours of sunlight each day. Group B received four hours, and Group C was kept in a place that received very little light.
Every plant received the same amount of water, but the students did not measure the temperature of each place. After four weeks, the average heights were 24 centimeters for Group A, 18 centimeters for Group B, and 7 centimeters for Group C.
Some students immediately concluded that more sunlight would always produce taller plants. Their teacher asked them to be careful. Different temperatures could also affect growth, and a plant might be harmed if it received too much direct sunlight. The study only examined one type of plant in three places for four weeks.
The students decided that their next experiment should include more plants and temperature measurements. They also wanted to record the number of healthy leaves rather than relying only on plant height.
To explain the findings to younger students, the club made a chart with all three groups and wrote a short paragraph describing what the data suggested and what it could not prove.
Q31. What did the club want to test? A. Whether more light might help vegetable plants grow / B. Whether students enjoyed sports / C. How to make a bridge / D. How many books were in the library
Q32. What did all three groups have in common? A. The same temperature / B. The same kind of seeds and amount of water / C. Exactly eight hours of light / D. The same average height
Q33. How much sunlight did Group B receive? A. Eight hours / B. One hour / C. Four hours / D. Almost none
Q34. Which group’s plants were shortest on average? A. A / B. B / C. A and B equally / D. C
Q35. What was Group A’s average height? A. 24 centimeters / B. 18 centimeters / C. 7 centimeters / D. 30 centimeters
Q36. What important factor did students fail to measure? A. Leaf color / B. Temperature / C. Number of pots / D. Water amount
Q37. Why did the teacher question the students’ conclusion? A. Light is never needed / B. All groups had the same results / C. Other factors and excessive sunlight might matter / D. The plants were made of plastic
Q38. How long did the study last? A. One week / B. Two weeks / C. Three weeks / D. Four weeks
Q39. What new measurement will the students add? A. Healthy leaf count / B. Daily train numbers / C. Number of visitors / D. Lunch costs
Q40. What was included in the final chart? A. Only the tallest plant / B. All three groups / C. Only Group A / D. No data
