| 期間 | before / during a trial | 試行中の結果を恒久的な事実にしない |
| 断定の強さ | may / might / could not prove | 原因が不確かな場合は断言しない |
A small town tried keeping its library open later on two days each week. Before the trial, the library closed at five in the afternoon every weekday. During the trial, it closed at seven on Tuesdays and Thursdays. After one month, workers counted sixty evening visitors on Tuesdays and forty on Thursdays. The staff said that more people had used the library in the evening on Tuesdays, but they did not know whether those numbers would stay the same over a longer period. Keeping the building open also required additional staff time. The town decided to continue collecting data rather than immediately changing the hours on every weekday.
A town tried extending library hours on two weekdays. Tuesday had more evening visitors than Thursday, but the town needed longer observation and staffing information before expanding the change.
Students in a science club wanted to reduce paper waste at school. They counted the number of printed sheets used in one classroom during two ordinary weeks. The first week, students used about eight hundred sheets. In the second week, teachers shared some materials digitally and students used about six hundred sheets. The group thought the change was encouraging because fewer sheets were printed. However, it was not possible to prove that digital materials were the only reason for the decrease. The two weeks had different lessons, and some activities naturally required less paper. The students planned a longer study before giving advice to the whole school.
A class used fewer printed sheets in the second week after some materials became digital. However, the lessons differed, so students could not attribute the entire reduction to technology.
People in Hilltown complained that the local bus came only once every hour. To make travel easier, the town tested a different timetable on Saturdays. Buses ran every thirty minutes between the station and the shopping area during the afternoon. A survey found that many passengers liked having more chances to travel, especially when they missed one bus. However, the extra services required more drivers and fuel. The town had enough money to run the trial for four weeks, but not enough information to make a permanent decision. Officials said they would compare costs, passenger numbers, and residents’ comments before deciding what to do next.
Hilltown tested buses every thirty minutes on Saturday afternoons instead of hourly service. Passengers welcomed more travel options, but higher operating costs required further review before a permanent change.
A school wanted to use part of its roof for a small garden. Students first suggested putting ten large planting boxes there. A building specialist explained that soil and water could add too much weight after heavy rain. The school reduced the plan to four smaller boxes and asked the specialist to check the roof before bringing them upstairs. Students also proposed collecting rainwater, but teachers reminded them that several dry weeks could leave the tank nearly empty. The revised project would give students a place to learn about plants while limiting some risks. The school said that regular checks would still be necessary after the garden opened.
A school reduced its rooftop garden from ten large boxes to four smaller ones after weight concerns. Rainwater might help, but safety checks and dry weather remained important limitations.
Two schools held an online discussion between students in different countries. The first meeting included twenty students, but teachers noticed that only six spoke more than once. They decided to divide the students into five smaller groups for the next meeting. At the second meeting, fifteen students spoke at least twice. Teachers thought that smaller groups might have encouraged more students to take part. However, the topic was also different, and some students had prepared more carefully the second time. The schools therefore planned more meetings before deciding how much the group size had affected participation.
After an online exchange shifted to smaller groups, more students spoke repeatedly. Teachers saw this as promising, but other differences between meetings prevented a definite conclusion about group size.
At River School, cafeteria workers offered the same amount of rice to every student. Many younger students left some rice, while older students often finished their meals. The cafeteria tried offering two portion sizes for one month. During the final week, workers recorded less rice left on plates than they had seen before the trial. Teachers also asked the school nurse to check that students were getting enough food. The school considered the results encouraging, but the staff did not claim that reducing every portion would be healthy. They wanted students to choose an appropriate amount rather than simply receive less food.
A school tested two rice portion sizes and observed less leftover rice. However, teachers also checked nutrition, emphasizing suitable choices rather than reducing every student’s food.
Tuesday had more visitors than Thursday |
| 800枚から600枚に減った | 変化量が主題なら数字を残す | fewer sheets were used in the second week |
- 期間:on Saturday afternoons を every day にしてしまう。
- 全体と一部:some students を all students に書き換える。
