  • Problem:
  • Action:
  • Observed result:

After introducing new signs, the town found less litter. New signs definitely solved the litter problem.

At Seaside School, staff noticed that students were leaving large amounts of rice on their lunch trays. During one week in April, they measured thirty kilograms of leftover rice. The school asked students whether they wanted a smaller or larger serving, then began offering two portion sizes.

In the following survey week, the amount of leftover rice was twenty kilograms. Some students said the new choice made it easier to take only the food they could eat. Teachers were pleased to see a lower amount.

However, the school also changed the lunch menu that week. The staff therefore said that the reduction was an observation, not proof that portion choices alone had caused it. They planned to keep records for several more weeks.

A school offered two serving sizes to reduce leftover rice. Recorded waste dropped from thirty to twenty kilograms, but menu changes also occurred, so the school could not identify one cause.

A town library found that forty-five books had been returned late during one two-week period. Librarians wanted to make due dates easier to remember. They started sending email reminders to members two days before borrowed books were due.

During the next two-week period, the number of late returns fell to thirty. Some members said the messages helped them plan a visit. The library also extended its opening hours on two evenings each week during the same month.

Because both changes happened close together, staff could not tell how much of the improvement came from the emails. They decided to continue comparing the records and to ask borrowers which change helped them most.

A library introduced email reminders before book due dates, and late returns fell from forty-five to thirty. However, opening hours also changed, so staff could not identify the reminders’ separate effect.

Visitors to Hill Park often left small pieces of rubbish near benches. Volunteers counted seventy pieces of litter during an afternoon walk. The park office put clear signs beside the bins and added pictures showing where paper and plastic should go.

Four weeks later, volunteers counted forty-five pieces of litter along the same route. The office considered the lower number encouraging. It also noticed that fewer people had visited the park on the second survey day.

Officials warned that changes in visitor numbers and weather could affect the count. They did not announce that the new signs had solved the problem. Instead, they planned more observations on days with similar conditions.

A park added clearer waste-bin signs, and volunteers later found less litter. However, visitor numbers and weather differed, so officials planned further checks instead of crediting the signs alone.

Before exams, some students at Lake School said that the library was too busy for quiet study. The school began opening an empty classroom each afternoon so students could read and review without group conversations.

During the first week, twenty students in one survey reported difficulty concentrating. In the second week, twelve students in a separate survey gave that answer. Teachers saw the lower number as a reason to continue providing a quiet space.

However, the two surveys did not ask exactly the same students, and the number of respondents also changed. Teachers said the data alone could not prove that the new room caused the difference.

A school opened a quiet study room before exams. Fewer students later reported difficulty concentrating, but the surveys involved different groups, so teachers could not prove the room caused the change.

The City History Museum wanted visitors to understand how tools had been used in the past. Some labels contained technical words, so staff rewrote them in shorter sentences and added simple definitions beside difficult terms.

In a survey the following month, sixty visitors correctly answered a question about one exhibit. Earlier, forty-five visitors had answered a similar question correctly. Staff thought the clearer labels might have helped.

However, the surveys involved different groups of visitors, and not everyone had read the same label. The museum described the results as an early sign of improvement rather than proof. It planned more testing with similar questions and groups.

A museum simplified its exhibit labels, and more surveyed visitors later answered a question correctly. However, the groups and questions differed, so the museum treated the improvement as preliminary.

A community sports center found that staff were reporting problems with exercise equipment every week. Managers introduced a short checklist for workers to complete before opening. It reminded them to check damaged handles, loose parts, and warning labels.

The number of reported problems fell during the next month. At the same time, the center replaced several old machines with new ones. Visitors said the rooms seemed better organized, although the center had not measured their satisfaction before the changes.

Managers explained that they could not tell whether the checklist or the new equipment was mainly responsible for the lower number of problems. They decided to keep using the checklist and continue collecting data.

A sports center introduced equipment checklists, and reported problems decreased. However, the center also replaced old machines, so managers could not determine whether the checklists were mainly responsible.

Late returns fell after reminders were introduced.(導入後に返却遅れが減った)
Results were encouraging but did not prove the cause.(結果は好ましいが原因の証明ではない)
Everyone benefited from the new program.(全員への効果は示されていない)

A. いいえ。

Q. NEW TREASURE
