A group of students wanted to improve signs at their town’s community theater. At first, they planned to print more maps because visitors sometimes had trouble finding their seats. The students decided to create signs with larger text and clearer colors. They also asked people of different ages to (22) the new signs before printing them.

Walking to School Together

In a small town, parents wanted to reduce traffic near an elementary school in the mornings. Some families lived close enough to walk, but parents worried about busy crossings. A group of volunteers started a “walking group” in which children met at agreed places and walked to school with adults.

During the first month, volunteers recorded how many children joined the groups. They also asked families whether they felt safer on the route. More children walked to school by the end of the month. However, the organizers knew that the walking group might not be the only reason. The weather had become warmer, and some families had changed their work schedules.

The volunteers decided to collect information over a longer period. They planned to compare days with similar weather and record the number of cars near the school gate. They also wanted to ask families who had not joined the group why they preferred other ways of traveling. The project showed that safety depends on more than simply encouraging people to walk: families need suitable meeting places, clear crossing rules, and reliable adult volunteers.

Q26 Why did the parents organize a walking group?

  • 1. To shorten the school day
  • 2. To reduce morning traffic and make walking safer
  • 3. To replace teachers with parents
  • 4. To sell bicycles to families

Q27 What did the organizers notice after one month?

  • 1. No children joined the program
  • 2. More cars were used by volunteers
  • 3. More children were walking to school
  • 4. The school was closed

Q28 Why couldn’t they say the group alone caused the change?

  • 1. The adults forgot to count children
  • 2. The school moved to another town
  • 3. All the crossings had disappeared
  • 4. Warmer weather and changed work schedules could also matter

Q29 What will the volunteers do next?

  • 1. Compare similar-weather days and count cars at the gate
  • 2. Stop asking families for opinions
  • 3. Require every child to join
  • 4. Remove the crossing rules

I think children in my town would enjoy a weekend puzzle club because they could solve problems with friends and learn new ideas. Your weekend puzzle club sounds interesting. How long does each meeting last? Can children bring their own puzzles? I would like to join a similar club.

I think schools should teach students basic first aid. First, students may be able to recognize when someone needs help and quickly inform an adult. For example, they could learn how to describe a problem clearly. Second, these lessons can make students more confident when unexpected situations happen. Such knowledge is useful outside school as well.
