From: Maria, River Museum
Subject: Saturday’s Volunteer Activity

Thank you for joining our river education program. On Saturday, we will teach younger children how to identify different kinds of stones and explain why clean water matters. We originally planned to meet at the museum entrance at 9:00 a.m., but a large school group will be arriving then. Please meet at the east gate at 9:15 a.m. instead.

Bring your own water bottle and a hat. You do not have to bring gloves or notebooks because the museum will provide them. Before the children arrive, the staff will demonstrate how to examine stones safely. Volunteers will help small groups and answer simple questions. If heavy rain is expected, we will move the activities to the museum classroom rather than cancel the program.

Please email the volunteer office by Thursday evening if you cannot attend. We hope to see you on Saturday.

A School’s Reusable Water Bottle Project

At one middle school, students noticed that many plastic drink bottles were thrown away after lunch. They suggested installing two water refill stations so students could fill reusable bottles. The principal agreed to test the idea for six weeks. During the trial, the student council recorded how many times the stations were used. They also asked students whether the water was easy to reach and whether the stations were kept clean.

In the first week, the stations were used about 180 times. By the sixth week, the number had risen to 310. The council was pleased, but the students did not assume that every use meant one fewer plastic bottle was purchased. Some students might have filled their bottles more than once each day, and others might have brought drinks from home even before the project began. The students therefore wanted more evidence before estimating how much plastic waste had been reduced.

The school decided to continue the trial. It moved one station closer to the sports field because several students said it was difficult to reach during club activities. The council also planned to compare the number of bottles collected for recycling before and after the trial. Its report explained what the figures showed and what they did not prove.

Q26 Why did students suggest refill stations?

  • 1. To sell bottled drinks at a higher price
  • 2. To reduce the use of disposable plastic bottles
  • 3. To replace all school drinking fountains
  • 4. To keep the sports field closed

Q27 How did station use change during the trial?

  • 1. It fell from 310 to 180 uses
  • 2. It stayed at 180 uses every week
  • 3. It rose from about 180 to 310 uses
  • 4. It increased to 3,100 uses

Q28 Why was it difficult to calculate the exact number of bottles saved?

  • 1. The stations were never used
  • 2. The council forgot to record the figures
  • 3. No one brought drinks from home
  • 4. One student might use the stations several times

Q29 What further information did the council plan to collect?

  • 1. The number of bottles collected for recycling
  • 2. The price of all new school bags
  • 3. The number of buses near the school
  • 4. The names of every student who drank water

1(However)

2(evaluate)

3(At the east gate at 9:15 a.m.)
元の入口9時ではなく、変更後のeast gate at 9:15 a.m.。

4(A water bottle and a hat)
Bring your own water bottle and a hat.

1(The program will move to a classroom)
move the activities to the museum classroom rather than cancel。

2(To reduce the use of disposable plastic bottles)

3(It rose from about 180 to 310 uses)

4(One student might use the stations several times)
Some students might have filled their bottles more than once each day が根拠。

1(The number of bottles collected for recycling)
compare the number of bottles collected for recycling before and after the trial。

Writing

I think children would enjoy a weekend plant exchange because they could learn about different flowers without spending much money. Your school plant exchange sounds interesting. How many plants can each student take home? What kinds of plants are usually available? I hope I can join one someday.

I think schools should organize a short community service activity every month. First, students can learn about problems in their neighborhoods by helping local people. For example, they could collect litter in a park. Second, working with classmates outside school may improve teamwork. Students can learn to divide tasks and listen to different ideas.
