④分母:35 of 40 respondents を all visitors に書き換えない。
In April, a community library asked 120 registered members whether longer evening hours would be useful. Eighty-four said they would welcome the change. The library reported that 70 percent of the members surveyed supported later access. Some staff members treated this as encouraging evidence of demand, although the survey did not include people who had never registered with the library.
In July, a local volunteer group approached 200 residents near a shopping street and asked whether they had visited the library at least once during the previous month. Sixty-four said that they had. An article comparing the studies described the results as contradictory, noting that 70 percent of surveyed library members wanted extended hours, while only 32 percent of surveyed residents had recently used the library.
The library’s director rejected the claim that the figures necessarily contradicted one another. The surveys asked different questions of different groups at different times. Wanting later hours is not the same as having visited recently. Meanwhile, a short pilot of evening access recorded an average of 42 entries per evening, compared with 30 entries on similar evenings earlier in the term. However, the pilot coincided with an examination period, and it did not establish why entries increased. The director wants feedback from nonmembers and information on staffing costs before recommending permanent evening hours.

A city museum compared ways to explain exhibits. In Gallery A, 150 visitors were counted during a two-week trial, and 90 of those visitors opened an audio guide on their phones. The museum described the opening rate as 60 percent. It also invited audio-guide users to complete a satisfaction questionnaire. Of the 40 users who responded, 35 said the guide was easy to follow. These figures suggested that the audio guide was useful to at least some visitors, but they did not reveal the views of everyone who attended.
In Gallery B, a separate team counted 80 visitors during a different two-week period. Fifty-six took printed guides from a table near the entrance, giving a take-up rate of 70 percent. Some organizers argued that printed guides must therefore be more popular than audio guides. Others pointed out that taking a printed guide did not prove that a visitor had read it, just as opening an audio guide did not show how long it had been used.
The museum’s research coordinator said that the two rates could not be treated as a fair comparison of preferences. The galleries, observation periods, and visitor groups were different. Moreover, satisfaction among 35 of the 40 audio-guide respondents could not establish that 87.5 percent of all Gallery A visitors liked the audio guide. The coordinator proposed testing both formats in the same gallery over a longer period and inviting users and nonusers to give feedback before deciding which materials to offer.

A local transport office examined two bus routes during a four-week trial. Route A had 200 recorded trips, of which 168 arrived within the office’s definition of ‘on time.’ Route B had 50 recorded trips, and 46 were on time. A report noted that Route A had more on-time trips in absolute numbers, while Route B had a higher on-time percentage. Some readers assumed that this meant Route B was definitely managed better.
The office’s analyst explained why this conclusion was premature. Route A served a busy road near the station, while Route B traveled through a quieter residential area. The routes also operated different numbers of trips. Although Route B’s on-time rate was 92 percent compared with Route A’s 84 percent, differences in traffic conditions could have contributed to the outcome. The study did not isolate the effects of scheduling decisions.
The office then surveyed passengers who had agreed to receive feedback messages. On Route B, 32 of the 40 people who responded said the timetable was easy to understand. This was useful feedback from a limited group, not evidence that 80 percent of every passenger on the route held that view. Officials planned to examine delay patterns over a longer period and ask passengers on both routes about their experiences before making schedule changes.
