英検準1級のReading・Writingで、that said / even so / on balance / all things considered / after allを同じ「しかし」「結局」と覚えると、筆者が何を認め、どのように結論を出したのかを見誤ります。

文脈によりthat said / even so、on balance / all things consideredなどが重なる場合もあります。

A group of teachers proposed extending the school library’s hours on two evenings each week. Students who had no quiet place at home welcomed the idea, but the school would need more staff to supervise the room. The principal acknowledged that additional costs could be difficult to manage. That said, she argued that a short trial might show whether enough students would benefit. After considering accessibility, staff availability, and the expected demand, she decided to test the arrangement for one term. On balance, the principal considered a limited trial more practical than promising permanent evening hours immediately.

Q26. What was the principal’s final decision?

Q27. On balance

Q28. Write a sentence that does not overstate the conclusion.

A26. To test the arrangement for one term rather than promise permanent late opening.

A27. accessibility、staff availability、expected demand

A history club wanted to add color to old black-and-white photographs for a school exhibition. Some students believed that color would help younger visitors imagine the past. However, the original colors could not be verified in every photograph. Even so, the club decided to display carefully labeled colorized versions beside the originals. The teacher explained that presenting both could encourage interest without hiding uncertainty. Visitors should be able to see which parts were based on records and which were informed guesses. After all, an engaging image is not necessarily an accurate historical document. All things considered, the club decided to use colorization as an interpretation, not as a replacement for the original evidence.

Q29. Why is Even so appropriate after the uncertainty?

Q30. What does After all introduce?

Q31. What does All things considered summarize?

Q32. Translate ‘not necessarily an accurate historical document’ accurately.

A29. The club proceeded with carefully labeled displays despite not knowing all original colors.

A30. A reason why engaging images should not be mistaken for verified evidence.

A31. The decision to use colorization as an interpretation while preserving originals.

Some people support the plan. That said, costs are uncertain. On balance, a trial is preferable to immediate expansion.

Writing

FAQ|That said と Even so はいつも違いますか?

FAQ|After all は文末で使えますか?

We should keep printed instructions. Not everyone owns a smartphone, after all.
