In the fictional city of Eldermark, a local newspaper published an article about a new flood-warning service. Its headline suggested that the service would prevent major losses, while the article itself said only that earlier warnings might help residents prepare. Several readers interpreted the headline as a guarantee. The editor acknowledged that a short title should attract attention without exaggerating what the evidence supported. She asked reporters to distinguish the number of warning messages sent from the number of people who had actually received and understood them.

The newsroom then interviewed emergency staff and residents living in different parts of the city. Some areas had unreliable mobile connections, and a few residents depended on printed notices. Reporters found that delivery records did not establish whether households had acted on a warning. The editor therefore added an explanation of the service’s limitations and replaced the headline with a more careful statement. A few readers complained that the new title sounded less dramatic, but others said it helped them understand what had been tested.

After publication, the newspaper established a review process for claims involving public safety. Editors planned to check who supplied each figure, which outcomes were observed, and what remained uncertain. Their aim was not to avoid reporting useful technology but to prevent readers from confusing a promising tool with a proven guarantee.

  2. No warnings had been sent.
  3. Every phone was disconnected.

A local newspaper reported on a flood-warning service using a headline that overstated its benefits. The article suggested earlier messages might help residents, but delivery records did not prove that warnings were understood or followed. After interviewing residents with different access needs, editors revised the headline and explained limitations. They introduced stronger checks on sources and evidence to avoid presenting promising technology as guaranteed protection.

A fictional student newspaper reported that eighty percent of respondents supported extending library hours. The headline attracted attention because it seemed to describe the opinion of the entire school. However, the survey had been distributed through an online club that mainly included students who regularly used the library. Only a small share of all enrolled students had responded. The editorial team began asking whether the finding should be described as support among survey participants rather than among students generally.

Reporters examined the questionnaire and found that its wording also mattered. One question asked whether students favored more access to quiet study spaces, while another asked whether the school should spend money on evening staffing. Agreement with the first idea did not necessarily imply support for the second. The newspaper interviewed students who had not participated and discovered a variety of reasons, including a lack of interest in library services and limited access to the survey link. The editors avoided treating nonrespondents as opponents of longer hours.

The corrected article stated the size and source of the sample and quoted the questions accurately. It also separated the number of respondents from the percentage choosing each answer. The newspaper concluded that a percentage could summarize a particular sample but could not, without suitable methods, automatically represent everyone affected by a policy. Its goal was clearer reporting, not discrediting the survey completely.

Q6. What was a concern about the survey?

  1. Every student was interviewed.
  2. Participants were drawn mainly from a library-oriented club.
  3. The school had no library.
  4. No percentage was reported.

Q7. What distinction did the two questions reveal?

  1. All students preferred online learning.
  2. Library staff opposed any changes.
  3. Wanting more study access differs from supporting staffing expenditure.
  4. Question wording never affects responses.

Q8. Why did editors avoid labeling nonrespondents as opponents?

  1. Failure to respond did not reveal their position.
  2. Every nonrespondent agreed.
  3. They had no right to opinions.
  4. All respondents were anonymous.

Q9. What was included in the corrected report?

  1. Only a dramatic headline.
  2. A claim about every enrolled student.
  3. No reference to the questionnaire.
  4. Information on sample size, recruitment, and wording.

Q10. What is the main lesson?

  1. Percentages are never useful.

  3. All online surveys are illegal.
  4. All readers need the same library schedule.

A student newspaper claimed that eighty percent supported longer library hours, but its survey mainly reached students who already used the library. Editors also found that support for more study space differed from support for paying additional staff. The corrected article identified the sample and exact questions without treating nonrespondents as opponents. It explained that a percentage cannot automatically represent an entire school.

In the fictional town of Eastwick, a newspaper received a message from an anonymous person claiming that a public hall would close permanently. The reporter considered publishing the information immediately, but the editor asked for independent confirmation. The message contained details about a recent inspection, yet it did not establish who had authority to decide the building’s future. Staff contacted the hall’s managers and searched public meeting records. They learned that officials were considering temporary repairs, not necessarily permanent closure.

The newspaper published a cautious report explaining what had been confirmed and what remained uncertain. A day later, it discovered that an earlier online notice had used the wrong date for a public meeting. Editors corrected the date and placed a visible note next to the article instead of silently changing it. Some readers argued that admitting an error would damage the paper’s reputation. The editor replied that the ability to identify and correct mistakes could strengthen accountability over time.

After the incident, the newsroom introduced a checklist for anonymous tips: check the source’s possible knowledge, seek documents and independent accounts, protect legitimate confidentiality, and distinguish plans from decisions. The newspaper did not promise that this process would prevent every reporting error. It aimed to reduce avoidable mistakes and make corrections easier for readers to find.

  1. The public hall did not exist.
  2. Every anonymous claim was automatically false.

Q12. What did official records reveal?

  1. Temporary repairs were being considered, not a confirmed permanent closure.
  2. The building had been sold.
  3. All public meetings were canceled.
  4. The reporter was the building manager.

Q13. How was the wrong meeting date handled?

  1. It was ignored.
  2. It was corrected with a visible notice.
  3. The newspaper permanently shut down.
  4. All previous reports were deleted.

Q14. What did the editor believe about corrections?

  1. They always damage trust.
  2. They eliminate every future mistake.

A newspaper received an anonymous claim about a public hall’s permanent closure. Editors checked official records and found that temporary repairs, not closure, were being considered. They also corrected an incorrect meeting date with a visible notice. Although some readers worried about admitting mistakes, the editor valued accountability. A new verification checklist aimed to reduce preventable errors without promising completely error-free reporting.
