難しい専門用語より、however・may・not establish・plan to compareなどが示す結論の限定に注目しましょう。
Interpretation:suggested / may / might=推定・解釈。Limitation:did not prove / insufficient / different conditions=結論の限界。Next step:will compare / plan to continue=今後の調査。

A local research group compared photographs of a coastal path taken twenty years apart. The newer images appeared to show that part of the beach had become narrower. Some residents immediately blamed rising sea levels, while others pointed to changes in storms and nearby construction. The researchers explained that photographs taken at different tide levels cannot by themselves establish how far the shoreline has moved. The group therefore began measuring the beach at the same marked points and recording the tide level at each visit. During the first three months, the width of the beach varied after storms. However, the researchers said the short observation period was insufficient to identify a long-term trend. They plan to continue the measurements and compare them with older survey records before recommending changes to the coastal path.

A. They were all taken at night
B. Different tide levels could affect the apparent shoreline
C. The photographs showed no beach at all
D. All residents agreed on one cause
Q2. What will the group do before recommending changes?
A. Continue consistent measurements and consult older records
B. Remove the coastal path immediately
C. Assume construction is the only cause
D. Stop all shoreline observations

Volunteers from a community science project collected water samples at three points along a river. Their aim was to learn why the water sometimes appeared cloudy after rainfall. During one visit, the water at the downstream point contained more suspended particles than the water upstream. A nearby construction project attracted attention, and some volunteers suggested it must have caused the difference. The project leader cautioned that other factors, including soil washed from fields, could also affect the results. The volunteers then scheduled more tests before and after rain, using the same sampling methods at all three points. They also planned to compare the observations with records of river flow. The leader emphasized that one set of samples could identify a pattern worth investigating but could not prove the source of every particle.

A mountain park installed sensors near a trail where small rockfalls had occasionally been reported. The sensors monitored movement in the ground and sent alerts when unusual changes were recorded. During a week of heavy rain, the system produced several alerts. Park staff temporarily closed one section of the trail until specialists could inspect the slope. Some visitors assumed that every alert meant that a major rockfall had occurred. The park explained that an alert signaled a possible concern, not confirmation of an event. Engineers inspected the area and found signs that some loose material had shifted, but they did not claim that a large rockfall had taken place. The park plans to review the sensor settings alongside rainfall records and inspection reports. Its priority is to make cautious decisions about access rather than promise that technology can predict every rockfall.

A school weather club had recorded temperatures on the roof of a building for several years. It later moved its measuring instrument to a grassy area near the playground because students could access the new location more easily. The club noticed that temperatures recorded in the afternoon were sometimes lower at the new site. Several members wondered whether the region’s climate had become cooler. Their teacher explained that the location of a thermometer can affect its readings. A rooftop surface and a grassy area may heat differently in direct sunlight. The club therefore installed a second thermometer and compared readings taken at the same time at both sites. The students learned that changes in measurement conditions must be considered before interpreting a difference as a long-term climate trend. They plan to document every future change in equipment or location.

A community astronomy club invited residents to count visible stars from a park. Volunteers recorded their observations over several evenings. People standing near bright streetlights tended to report fewer visible stars than those observing from a darker corner of the park. Some participants concluded that the number of stars in the sky had decreased. The club’s instructor explained that light from lamps can make faint stars difficult to see, even though the stars themselves have not disappeared. Cloud cover and the time of observation can also affect visibility. To make the records more comparable, volunteers used the same observation time and noted the condition of the sky. The club hopes the activity will help residents understand the difference between what can be observed and what can be concluded from an observation.

A small museum received several fossils from a construction site. The workers had recorded the approximate locations where they found the objects, but not the precise rock layers. An early report suggested that all the fossils came from the same geological period because they had been discovered within a relatively small area. A visiting researcher warned that this explanation was too strong. Different layers can be exposed close to one another, and objects may be moved by natural processes or human activity. The museum therefore asked specialists to examine the surrounding rock records and compare the fossils’ features with well-documented collections. The researchers hope to narrow down possible origins, but they have not established one exact date for every item. They will label the exhibits clearly so that visitors can distinguish confirmed observations from provisional interpretations.
Q26. Why was the first dating claim considered too strong?
A. The fossils had never been found
B. Every fossil was exactly the same age
C. Precise layers were unknown, and nearby finds need not share one origin
D. The museum already knew an exact date for every fossil
Q27. What will the museum communicate in its exhibits?
A. Only the early speculation as certain fact
B. No information about the fossils
C. A guarantee that every object has the same origin
D. The difference between observed facts and provisional interpretations
Q30. What remains uncertain after the initial report?
