A town reviewed two public services: its library and its health clinic. The former provided quiet study rooms, while the latter offered medical appointments. During the first month, the library and the clinic received 150 and 90 inquiries, respectively. Officials also compared an online booking system with a telephone service. The latter was important for residents without suitable devices. Both systems needed clear instructions, but neither could guarantee that everyone would be able to reach the buildings. Some people had mobility difficulties or lived beyond the available bus routes. The council therefore proposed evaluating access, costs, and actual use of the services separately. Higher inquiries at one facility did not show that the other was less valuable, because their purposes and users differed.

Q33. Which service offered medical appointments?

  1. The former service, the library
  2. The latter service, the clinic
  3. Both facilities exclusively
  4. Neither of the facilities

Q34. Which facility received 150 inquiries?

  1. The library
  2. The clinic
  3. Both facilities
  4. The transport office

Q35. Why did the telephone option matter?

  1. It always cost less
  2. It removed every travel difficulty
  3. It served some residents without suitable digital devices
  4. It made all appointments unnecessary

Q36. What did neither booking system guarantee?

  1. A form of communication
  2. A fixed number of inquiries
  3. A reduction in the town’s population
  4. That everyone could reach the facilities

A school tested two approaches to vocabulary practice. The first required students to study printed word lists, and the second used short online quizzes. The former was available without internet access, while the latter provided rapid automated feedback. Schools A and B began with 40 and 35 participants, respectively. However, the number of students who completed the entire trial differed from the number originally enrolled. Both methods appeared useful to some learners, but neither had been shown to improve everyone’s scores. Teachers wanted to assess whether students could recall vocabulary independently. Some pupils also used both methods, so the evaluation team could not treat every result as evidence for only one approach. It recommended clearer comparisons and a report of the limitations before announcing any school-wide policy.

Q37. Which method worked without internet access?

  1. Online quizzes
  2. Both methods automatically
  3. Neither method
  4. The former, printed word lists

Q38. How many people initially joined at School B?

  1. 40
  2. 35
  3. 75
  4. 5

Q39. Why could the study not credit every gain to one method?

  1. Some pupils used both methods
  2. The teachers had never taught vocabulary
  3. Both schools had closed
  4. No student completed a quiz

Q40. Which conclusion is best supported?

  1. Neither method can ever help
  2. One short trial guarantees a permanent solution
  3. Both may help some learners, but results require careful evaluation
  4. The latter must be used by all families

Q17:The library and the clinic served 200 and 150 visitors, respectively.

Q18:The committee discussed cost and quality. The latter means quality.

Q19:Neither of the two plans is practical. 理由:neither of the twoは標準的な英作文では単数一致。

Q20:Both the manager and the technician are responsible. 理由:both A and Bは複数主語。

Q21:The two options are online classes and printed lessons. The latter works without internet.

Q22:The museum and the library received 40 and 60 requests, respectively.

Q23:Neither of the applicants had experience, so neither was qualified.

Q24:The two programs were free and paid. The latter had a monthly fee.

Q25:The library and the museum welcomed 120 and 80 visitors, respectively.

Q26:The two policies focus on cost and safety. The former concerns budgets, and the latter concerns risks. 理由:former/latterで二つの対象を順に指す。

Q27:Neither of the two proposals is perfect. 理由:neither of the two+単数動詞。

Q28:Both methods may be useful.

Q29:You can attend either of the two courses. 理由:either of the twoでいずれか片方。

Q30:Schools A and B had five and seven absent students, respectively.

Q31:Neither of the two entrances has a ramp.

Q32:The collection team and the review team had different roles. The former collected the documents, and the latter checked their accuracy.

Q34 正答 A:respectivelyでlibrary150、clinic90。

B:Schools A and B, 40 and 35 respectively。 誤答3肢:Aは学校A。

The former improved accessibility, whereas the latter reduced operating costs.(前者は利用のしやすさを、後者は費用を改善した)のように説明できます。

FAQ

三つ以上ではfirst/second/thirdや対象名を繰り返した方が明確です。

neitherとnot bothは同じですか?
