A private secondary school joined a project to test water quality in a nearby river. Sensors first detected a small concentration of an unfamiliar substance. The equipment could establish that something was present, but it could not identify the substance. Researchers therefore collected samples and used laboratory tests to identify the chemical. Teachers asked students to observe the river over several weeks and record visible changes in plant growth. One student noticed an unusual color in a sample bottle while preparing a chart. A senior scientist recognized the label of an older testing method because she had used it years earlier. The team emphasized that each action had a different meaning: detecting the presence of a substance, identifying its exact type, observing changes over time, noticing an unexpected detail and recognizing something already familiar. The school did not claim that the chemical had caused all changes in the river.

D1. What could the first sensors detect?

D2. How was the chemical identified?

D3. What were students asked to observe?

D4. Did the school prove that the chemical caused all changes in the river?

A conservation team installed automated cameras in a national park to observe animal movements over an entire season. One camera detected an unusual sound late at night, and the team checked the audio recording. A junior worker noticed a brief second call in the file that others had overlooked. An experienced biologist recognized the call as familiar from earlier fieldwork, but she did not immediately announce which species had made it. Instead, the researchers compared multiple recordings and tracks before identifying the likely animal. The project later used a separate sensor to detect changes in water temperature near the animals’ habitat. The researchers warned that recognizing a sound did not guarantee that its source had been correctly identified. They also noted that detecting a temperature change did not prove the change had caused animal migration. Students using the report were asked to distinguish observation, detection, recognition, identification and simple noticing.

D5. What did cameras observe over an entire season?

D6. What detail did a junior worker notice?

D7. Why did the biologist avoid immediately identifying the species?

D8. What did a separate sensor detect later?

D1:The presence of a small amount of an unfamiliar substance.

D2:Through laboratory testing of collected samples.

D3:Changes in the river, including visible plant growth, over several weeks.

D4:No. It explicitly avoided that claim.

D5:Animal movements in the national park.

D6:A brief second animal call in an audio recording.

D7:Recognizing a familiar call was not sufficient to identify its source with certainty.

D8:Changes in water temperature near the habitat.

Sensors detected a substance, but laboratory tests were needed to identify it.という原文を、Sensors identified the substance. Sensors found evidence of an unknown substance, which required laboratory analysis.
