A museum received a handwritten letter said to have been written by a well-known scientist. Before announcing the discovery, curators tried to authenticate the letter by examining the paper, ink and chain of ownership. They then checked original historical registers to verify the date written on the envelope. A separate archive provided meeting notes that corroborated several details mentioned in the letter, although the notes did not prove every sentence was correct. Meanwhile, the museum developed a new digital tool for recognizing handwriting. Researchers tested it on many independent examples to validate its accuracy before making it available to schools. A sponsor wanted the museum to claim that the tool could identify any historical author, but staff refused because there was not enough evidence to substantiate such a broad claim. The museum’s final article explained that confirming an object’s authenticity, checking dates, finding supporting evidence, testing a method and justifying a public claim were different tasks.

D1. What evidence was used to authenticate the letter?

D2. How was the envelope’s date verified?

D3. What corroborated details from the letter?

D4. Why did staff refuse the sponsor’s broad claim?

A secondary school introduced a digital reading-support program and wanted to measure its effect. The teacher first verified that the test scores recorded in the school’s spreadsheet matched the original answer sheets. Researchers then validated a new reading assessment by examining whether it measured the intended skills consistently across different classes. An independent evaluator collected classroom observations that corroborated several teachers’ reports of increased participation. However, the head teacher refused to state that the software had caused every improvement, because the school had not yet collected enough comparative evidence to substantiate such a claim. The school also used secure accounts to authenticate students before giving them access to their records. At a parent meeting, staff explained that accurate scores, a validated assessment, independent supporting observations and authenticated access each served different functions; none alone proved the software was responsible for all improvements.

D5. What did the teacher verify before the evaluation?

D6. What did researchers validate?

D7. What corroborated teachers’ reports of participation?

D8. Why would staff not attribute every improvement to the software?

FAQ
