Comparing Two Ways to Keep Water Cool
Students in a science club wanted to learn which container could keep water cool for longer. They filled two bottles with the same amount of water and placed them in a warm room. One bottle was covered with a thick cloth, while the other was left uncovered.
After thirty minutes, the water in the covered bottle was 19 degrees Celsius. The other bottle was 23 degrees. At first, the students were pleased with the results, (1) their teacher asked them to check whether the bottles had started at exactly the same temperature.
The students realized that they had not measured the starting temperatures. (2), they repeated the experiment on another day. Both bottles began at 16 degrees. After thirty minutes, the covered bottle reached 20 degrees, while the uncovered bottle reached 24 degrees.
The group decided to record both the beginning and ending temperatures in its report. (3) using only the final numbers, they calculated how many degrees the water warmed in each bottle.
They also noted that one experiment in a warm room would not prove how the bottles behaved in cold weather. (4) they wanted a stronger conclusion, they would need to test different conditions.

Subject: Changes to the Student Research Presentation Day
Dear Participants,
Thank you for registering for our research presentation day next Saturday. We expect thirty-six student presenters, and each group will have six members.
The event was originally planned for a classroom at 10:00 a.m. Because more visitors registered than expected, we have moved the event to the community hall. The first presentation will now begin at 10:30. All presenters must arrive by 9:50 to check the equipment.
Each group will have four minutes to present its research. The audience will then ask questions for two minutes. Please explain the main finding in your own words. You may use one chart or photograph, but please avoid reading every sentence directly from a screen.
The organizers will provide paper, markers and a projector. Students should bring a notebook and a reusable water bottle. Lunch will be provided for presenters but not for visitors.
After lunch, a researcher will give a short talk about the importance of checking sources. The program will end at 3:15 p.m.
If you need a vegetarian lunch, please email us by Tuesday evening. If you are unable to attend, let us know by Thursday at noon so that another student can take your place.
Best wishes,
The Presentation Team

A Reading Habit Study
A group of students wanted to learn whether short daily English reading sessions improved their confidence. They invited forty-eight students to read for fifteen minutes each evening during a four-week period.
Students could choose books that were suitable for their level. The organizers asked them to write a one-sentence note after each reading session. They also recorded how many sessions each student completed.
Before and after the project, everyone took similar short reading tests. Twenty-nine students scored higher in the final test, twelve received almost the same scores, and seven scored lower. In a separate survey, thirty-two students reported feeling more comfortable reading English.
Some organizers believed the results proved that daily reading always caused higher scores. Their teacher warned them not to reach that conclusion too quickly. There was no comparison group following a different study plan, and some participants had taken extra English lessons during the same period.
The group also noticed that students who chose interesting topics often read more regularly. However, this did not show whether the topic or the extra practice was the main cause of higher scores.
For their next study, they plan to compare two reading schedules and record outside English study time. They will measure not only how fast students read but also how accurately they answer questions.
Q31. How many students joined the project? A. Forty / B. Forty-five / C. Forty-eight / D. Fifty
Q32. How long did students read each day? A. Fifteen minutes / B. Five minutes / C. Twenty minutes / D. An hour
Q33. How long did the project last? A. Two weeks / B. Three weeks / C. Five weeks / D. Four weeks
Q34. What did students write after each reading session? A. A long essay / B. One sentence / C. A message to their parents / D. A dictionary entry
Q35. How many scored higher in the final reading test? A. Twelve / B. Seven / C. Twenty-nine / D. Thirty-two
Q36. How many scored lower? A. Seven / B. Twelve / C. Twenty-nine / D. Forty-eight
Q37. How many reported feeling more comfortable? A. Twenty-nine / B. Forty-eight / C. Twelve / D. Thirty-two
Q38. Why could the project not prove a cause? A. All students chose the same book / B. No comparison group existed and some took extra lessons / C. Students did not read / D. The test was canceled
Q39. What did the organizers notice about reading choices? A. Long books were always best / B. Students disliked all books / C. Interesting topics often supported regular reading / D. All students enjoyed the same topic
Q40. What will the next study measure? A. Outside study time and accuracy / B. The number of classrooms / C. Only student height / D. The length of every book cover
