英語の「AもBも」「AだけでなくBも」は、単語をつないだだけでは正しい英文になりません。both A and Bは2つを並列し、not only A but also Bは追加する情報を強調します。一方、as well asは付加的な情報をつなぐため、主語と動詞の単複一致がboth … andと異なることがあります。さらにNot onlyを文頭に置くと、Not only did she …のような倒置が必要です。慶英会では中高一貫校の定期テストと英検の英作文に応用できる独自40問・全解説を無料公開します。

both … and／not only … but also／as well asの違い【比較表】

both A and Bは「どちらも」：主語なら複数形
Both the teacher and the students are here.のように、bothで2つの主語を結べば動詞を複数形にするのが基本です。Both Aya and Ken speak English.ではspeakに三単現の-sを付けません。片方のAyaだけを見てspeaksとしてしまう誤りは、主語を文全体で考えていないことが原因です。
not only A but also Bは名詞・形容詞・動詞の形をそろえる
She enjoys not only reading but also writing.ではreadingとwritingが同じ動名詞です。The course is not only useful but also practical.ならusefulとpracticalが同じ形容詞です。後半に目立つ単語を置くため、not only A but also Bは単なるandより強調が強くなる場合があります。alsoが省略される自然な用法もありますが、練習ではまず基本形を安定させます。
as well asで主語の数が変わらないのはなぜ？
The principal, as well as the teachers, is ready.では、主語の中心はprincipalで単数です。teachersという複数形が近くてもisで受けます。一方Both the principal and the teachers are ready.は2つの主語の並列なのでareです。as well asをandと機械的に同一視しないことが定期テストや英作文で重要です。
as well as＋-ing：as well as doingと間違えて書きやすい
As well as learning grammar, he practises speaking.は「文法を学ぶことに加え、話す練習もしている」という意味です。Cambridge Dictionaryの説明でも、as well asが行動を表す節に続く場合には-ing形を用いる構造が案内されています。as well as he learns grammarのように一般的な従属接続詞と同じ形で続けるのは避けます。
文頭Not onlyは倒置：Not only did she …
Not only did she answer correctly, but she also explained why.では、通常のShe answered …の語順がNot only did she answer …に変化しています。一般動詞の過去ならdid＋主語＋原形、be動詞ならNot only was he …、助動詞ならNot only can she …という形です。文中でShe not only answered …とする場合まで常に倒置するわけではなく、Not onlyが節の先頭に移動して強調される場合がポイントです。

問1〜25は二択、問26〜35は誤文訂正、問36〜40は和文英訳です。各1点、40点満点。「not only … but also」の前後が同じ品詞・文の役割かどうかも必ず説明してください。
第1部｜both … and：2つとも（問1〜5）
both X and Yは二者とも含む表現。二者が主語なら原則として複数動詞を使います。

第2部｜not only A but also B：AだけでなくBも（問6〜10）
追加される内容に重点を置き、同じ種類の語句をなるべく並べて対応させます。

第3部｜並列構造：動名詞・原形・名詞をそろえる（問11〜15）
not onlyの前後で異なる品詞を無計画に混ぜないようにします。

第4部｜as well as：付加表現と主語の一致（問16〜20）
X, as well as Y, は単純なandと違い、通常Xを主語の中心として動詞を一致させます。

Not onlyで文節を始めて強調する場合、助動詞・be動詞と主語の順序を倒置します。
