a number of・the number ofの違い｜主語と動詞の単複一致40問【無料】

英検や中高一貫校の定期テストで、a number of students areとthe number of students isの違いを正確に説明できますか。見た目は一語しか違いませんが、a number ofは「何人かの」という複数の人・物を示し、the number ofは「人数・個数」という一つの数値を主語にします。またmost of the studentsとmost of the waterでは、後ろの名詞が複数か不可算かによって動詞が変わります。慶英会ではこうした主語・動詞の一致を、独自40問・全解答と14日間の復習で学べるようにしました。

a number of studentsはare、the number of studentsはis

A number of students are absent.は「何人かの生徒が欠席している」という意味です。The number of students is growing.は「生徒数が増えている」という意味です。後者のstudentsが複数でも、増えている対象はnumberという単一の指標なのでisを用います。aとtheの違いが意味と動詞の両方を変えると理解してください。

most of／some of／half ofは、何を数えているかで変わる

Most of the students are here.ではstudentsという複数の生徒が主語の内容です。一方Most of the water is clean.ではwaterが数えられない名詞なので単数形で受けます。同じmost ofを見ただけで動詞を決めず、ofの後ろの名詞が複数可算か不可算かを確認します。

one of my friends is：friendsが複数でも動詞は単数

One of my friends is a teacher.は「友人たちの中の一人」が主語なのでisを使います。one ofの後にはfriendsのような複数名詞が必要です。One of my friend is…と単数名詞にしてしまう誤りにも注意しましょう。

pairとnews、mathematicsは見かけの複数形に注意

A pair of gloves is …はglovesが複数でも一組を指すpairが主語の中心です。The news is …はnewsの末尾にsがあっても通常単数扱いです。Mathematics is …も教科・学問分野の名前として一般に単数で受けます。外見上の-sだけで判断しないでください。

集合名詞はイギリス英語・アメリカ英語で揺れがある

team、government、family、audienceなどの集合名詞には、イギリス英語で構成員を意識した複数動詞が使われることがあります。一律に「集合名詞はすべて単数」と断定するのは適切ではありません。本教材では曖昧な採点を避けるため、a number of、the number of、one of、不可算名詞など、学校の基本文法で明確に答えられる例を優先しました。

a number ofは「何人か・多数の」の意味で、複数名詞と複数動詞を使います。

water・information・moneyなど数えられない名詞にかかる量は単数動詞を使うのが基本。

a number of students isは間違いですか？

a number ofが「何人かの・多数の」を表す通常の構文ではa number of students areと複数形を使います。

the number of students areは正しいですか？

人数という指標そのものが主語ならthe number of students isが基本です。studentsが複数でも主語の中心はnumberです。

most of the homeworkはisですか？

homeworkは通常不可算名詞なのでmost of the homework is …となります。homeworksという複数名詞にしない点にも注意します。

one of my friendsは友達1人だからfriendですか？

いいえ。one ofの後には集合を表す複数名詞friendsを使い、動詞は中心語oneに合わせて単数isなどにします。
