|---|---|
| Sales vs Waste |
| Number vs Mass |
| Trial vs Proven Effect |
| Collection vs Recycling |
Original data: In a fictional school, a shop sold 120 single-use bottled drinks in Week 1 and 90 in Week 2. A water-refill station began operating between the weeks. However, the number of school events also differed, and the shop did not record the number of refillable bottles used. These figures concern bottles sold at one shop, not total plastic waste or marine pollution. The school has not measured disposal or leakage into the environment.
問1:What is the observed change in bottled-drink sales?
問2:Calculate the absolute difference.
問3:Calculate the relative decrease.
問4:Can the drop be attributed solely to the refill station?
問5:Does the record directly measure plastic entering the ocean?
問6:Write a qualified claim.
問7:Name one unmeasured outcome.
問8:Give a fair counterargument.
問9:Propose one additional measure.
問10:Write a balanced Critical Writing paragraph of about 140–160 words.
Original data: At a fictional one-day beach-cleanup exercise, students collected 150 litter items: 90 pieces of plastic, 40 pieces of paper and 20 metal items. The measured collected masses were 1.5 kilograms of plastic, 0.8 kilograms of paper and 1.2 kilograms of metal. The group used the same counting rule for every category. No earlier or later beach survey was conducted, and the collected items were not identified as materials that had come directly from the ocean.
問11:How many items were collected in total?
問12:What percentage of collected items was plastic?
問13:What was the total recorded collected mass?
問14:What percentage of collected mass was plastic?
問15:Why do the two plastic percentages differ?
問16:Can the group claim that 60 percent of the collected weight was plastic?
問17:Does one cleanup prove that beach pollution decreased over time?
問18:Does this count establish where the litter originated?
問19:Suggest a useful data-collection improvement.
問20:Write a careful environmental argument based on both units.
Original data: A fictional cafeteria recorded 200 lunch purchases on one day before a reusable-container trial and another 200 on a trial day. Before the trial, 150 purchases involved single-use containers and 50 involved reusable ones. During the trial, the counts were 90 single-use and 110 reusable. Staff spent 40 minutes on container-related tasks before the trial and 90 minutes on the trial day. These are two days with different menus and customers. No lifecycle emissions, sanitation outcomes or long-term costs were measured.
問21:What was the single-use container share before the trial?
問22:What was the share during the trial?
問23:Calculate the difference in percentage points.
問24:Calculate the relative reduction in the single-use share.
問25:How did the recorded reusable-container count change?
問26:How much additional staff time was recorded?
問27:Can the data prove that lifecycle emissions decreased?
問28:Can the two days be treated as a perfectly controlled comparison?
問29:State a conditional recommendation.
問30:Write a balanced policy recommendation paragraph.
Original data: In a fictional school sorting exercise, 80 used plastic bottles were collected in marked bins during one week. When checked for a local recycling programme, 56 were accepted for processing and 24 were rejected because of contamination or other specified acceptance rules. The school has no record of how many of the accepted bottles were ultimately recycled into new products. It also has no reliable count of bottles used but placed elsewhere, so the collected 80 are not necessarily all bottles used in the school.
問31:How many bottles entered the collection bins?
問32:How many were accepted for processing?
問33:How many were rejected?
問34:Calculate the acceptance rate among collected bottles.
問35:Calculate the rejection rate.
問36:Does acceptance for processing prove completed recycling?
問37:Can we calculate the percentage of all bottles used at school that entered these bins?
問38:Give one possible area for improvement.
問39:Suggest a stronger effectiveness measure.
問40:Write a careful recycling claim and proposal.
1:Sales fell from 120 to 90 bottles in the two weeks.
2:Thirty fewer bottles were sold in Week 2.
3:The recorded sales count decreased by 25 percent relative to Week 1.
4:No. School-event schedules also changed.
5:No. It records shop sales, not marine leakage.
6:The school recorded fewer single-use bottled-drink sales after the refill station began operating.
7:The number of refills in reusable bottles was not recorded.
8:Refill stations may be useful, but operation, maintenance and access must also be considered.
9:Record refill transactions alongside bottled-drink sales and comparable event schedules.
10:Reducing unnecessary single-use plastic can be a worthwhile school goal, but a change in sales does not by itself prove a change in environmental damage. A fictional shop sold 120 bottled drinks in one week and 90 in the next, a decline of 30 bottles or 25 percent. A refill station began operating between these periods, so it may have contributed to the difference. However, school-event schedules also changed, and no refill counts or waste-disposal records were collected. The figures therefore cannot establish how much plastic was prevented from becoming waste or entering the ocean. I would support a small, accessible refill programme combined with better measurement. The school should record refill use, bottled-drink sales, maintenance requirements and actual waste handling over comparable periods. Those results would provide a stronger basis for deciding whether to expand the programme.
11:The group collected 150 litter items.
12:Plastic accounted for 60 percent of the collected item count.
13:The collected mass totalled 3.5 kilograms.
14:Plastic accounted for approximately 42.9 percent of collected mass.
15:One percentage uses item counts, while the other uses collected mass.
16:No. Sixty percent describes the count, not the mass.
17:No. No before-and-after litter survey was conducted.
18:No. The route or source of each item was not traced.
19:Repeat standardised surveys at comparable sites and record both item numbers and masses.
20:A beach-cleanup record can show what volunteers collected, but it does not automatically measure changes in all marine pollution. In a fictional exercise, students gathered 150 litter items, including 90 pieces of plastic. Plastic therefore made up 60 percent of the collected items. By mass, however, the plastic weighed 1.5 kilograms out of 3.5 kilograms, or approximately 42.9 percent. These results differ because counting pieces and weighing materials answer different questions. No comparable survey before or after the cleanup was conducted, and the origins of the litter were not traced. I would support continued cleanups combined with standardised monitoring and measures that prevent waste at source. Schools should report both counts and weights honestly rather than choosing whichever percentage sounds more dramatic. A single cleanup also cannot reveal how much waste may arrive later, so collection records and prevention measures should be evaluated separately.
21:Single-use containers accounted for 75 percent of purchases.
22:They accounted for 45 percent of purchases.
23:The share fell by 30 percentage points.
24:The share was 40 percent lower relative to the earlier 75-percent share.
25:It increased from 50 to 110 purchases.
26:The recorded task time was 50 minutes longer.
27:No. Lifecycle emissions were not assessed.
28:No. Menus and customers differed between the days.
29:A longer trial is reasonable if hygiene, access, labour and costs can be checked.
30:Reusable containers might reduce a school’s reliance on disposable packaging, but a single successful-looking day is not enough to measure the full environmental benefit. In a fictional cafeteria, single-use containers were associated with 150 of 200 purchases before a trial and 90 of 200 on a trial day. Their recorded share fell from 75 to 45 percent, a decrease of 30 percentage points. At the same time, container-related staff work rose from 40 to 90 minutes. The two days also involved different menus and customers, and the school did not measure sanitation outcomes, lifecycle emissions or longer-term costs. I would recommend a longer, voluntary trial with clear handling procedures, reliable cleaning and accessible alternatives. The school should record both packaging use and operating resources before deciding whether the system is sustainable. The programme should also explain how the containers are cleaned and how students with different needs can use the system fairly.
31:Eighty bottles were recorded in the marked collection bins.
32:Fifty-six bottles were accepted for processing.
33:Twenty-four bottles were rejected.
34:The acceptance rate was 70 percent of collected bottles.
35:The rejection rate was 30 percent.
36:No. The final recycling outcomes were not recorded.
37:No. The total number of bottles used at the school is unknown.
38:Clear sorting instructions and checks for contamination may reduce rejection.
39:Track how many accepted bottles actually complete recycling and estimate the total bottles used.
40:A school should distinguish collecting plastic from successfully recycling it. In a fictional one-week exercise, students placed 80 used bottles in designated bins. Fifty-six were accepted for processing, while twenty-four were rejected, giving a 70 percent acceptance rate among collected bottles. However, acceptance did not establish that the 56 bottles ultimately became new products. The school also did not know how many bottles were used but discarded elsewhere. Therefore, it cannot claim a 70 percent recycling rate for all plastic used at school. I would support clearer collection instructions and checks on contamination while requesting information from the processing programme about final outcomes. Reporting collection, acceptance and completed recycling as separate stages would make future environmental claims more reliable. Items accepted at one stage can still fail later in the recycling process, so final outcomes need transparent tracking.
