(The Blue Umbrella)
When I arrived at the small station, the rain was already falling hard. An old blue umbrella stood beside the ticket machine. I picked it up and noticed a piece of yellow tape wrapped around the handle. My train would leave in five minutes, and I had no umbrella of my own. I considered taking it, but I placed it on the station desk instead. The clerk wrote down the time and said that someone had probably left it in a hurry. The next evening, I passed the station again. An elderly woman was speaking to the same clerk. She held the blue umbrella and pointed at the yellow tape. The clerk waved at me, but I continued toward the platform before they could say anything. At home, I told my sister that the umbrella had found its owner. She asked why I had left so quickly. I said I was afraid of missing my train, although I had arrived much earlier than usual.
- Q8. 誤った要約『The narrator borrowed the umbrella and returned it personally.』

— placed it on the station desk。
- Q4. — held the blue umbrella / pointed at yellow tape。
- Q5. — afraid of missing / although … much earlier。
- Q8. The narrator found an umbrella and left it at the station desk; it appeared to reach its owner later.
An unnamed first-person narrator finds a blue umbrella at a station and leaves it with the clerk instead of taking it. The next day, a woman appears to collect the same umbrella. The narrator leaves before speaking to her and offers an explanation that may not tell the whole story.

(The Last Library Hour)
Every Thursday, a boy named Daniel sat at the corner table of the neighborhood library. He brought a notebook filled with sketches of buildings, although he rarely borrowed books about architecture. One afternoon, a notice appeared near the entrance: the library would close at the end of the month for repairs. Daniel folded the notice carefully and put it in his notebook. During the final week, he began drawing the librarians instead of the shelves. A librarian noticed and asked whether he wanted to display his pictures at the reopening. Daniel said that they were unfinished. On the last Thursday, the librarian found a small drawing on the return desk. It showed the corner table, the window, and a cup of tea that had never actually stood there. Under the picture were the words, ‘Please save this seat if you can.’ The librarian placed the drawing inside a folder marked ‘For the opening day.’ Daniel did not see her do this. He was already walking home through the cold evening air.

— Please save this seat if you can。
— Daniel did not see her do this。
— repairs / reopening / opening dayが根拠。

(The Envelope in the Drawer)
After his grandfather moved to a smaller apartment, Leo helped sort the things left in the old house. Most drawers held papers that nobody needed. In the bottom of a desk, however, Leo found an envelope containing a small key and a note. The note read, ‘This opens the box near the garden wall.’ Leo went outside and searched the wall until he found a wooden box hidden behind a loose stone. Inside were photographs of the garden taken over many years. In the earliest pictures, a thin tree stood beside the path. In the latest, its branches covered the bench below. Leo showed the photographs to his grandfather that evening. His grandfather studied them for a long time before pointing to a picture of the tree in winter. ‘Your grandmother planted it,’ he said. Leo wanted to ask more questions, but his grandfather closed the album gently and suggested having tea. The next morning, Leo placed the photographs in a new folder and wrote the dates on the back of each one, leaving several dates marked with a question mark.

(The Lantern at the Theater)
The school drama club had practiced for weeks when the lights went out just before the evening performance. Everyone waited in the dark while a teacher checked the electrical system. A student named Nao suggested canceling, but the director asked the group to wait ten minutes. An older caretaker then brought a battery-powered lantern from a storage room. It was not bright enough to light the stage, yet it made the entrance safe for people to move through. The director told the audience that the performance would be postponed rather than canceled. Some parents looked disappointed, but others offered to help contact people who had already left home. Nao sat beside the silent stage, holding a folded copy of the script. After the audience had departed, the caretaker switched off the lantern. Nao asked whether they could rehearse the final scene once more in daylight the next day. The director agreed. The following afternoon, the group met as planned, but the school had not yet chosen a new performance date.
