NEW TREASURE Stage5のFurther Readingで情景描写を読む際は、setting(場所・時刻・天候・音・光)とatmosphere(場面全体の雰囲気)を分けます。
At half past four, the school courtyard was nearly empty. Rainwater ran from the edge of the roof into a narrow drain. The only sound was the steady tapping of drops against a metal bin. Rina stood beneath the roof holding a folder of sketches. Her class had planned to display the drawings outdoors, but the tables had been moved into the hall when the rain began. She watched the wet stone steps for several minutes. Then a door opened behind her, and two classmates came out carrying dry cloths. The rain stopped. Sunlight appeared between the buildings, and a few students returned to the courtyard. Rina placed her folder on a bench, looked at the sky, and helped the others wipe the tables. The narrator does not say that she was sad during the rain or suddenly happy when the sun appeared. The weather and sounds change the atmosphere of the scene, but the reader needs the character’s actions and wider context to infer her feelings. The drawings were displayed in the hall that evening. Whether the outdoor display will take place another day is not stated.

Before sunrise, the small town market was already full of sounds. A fish seller dragged wooden crates across the pavement, and a delivery truck stopped beside the narrow entrance. Steam rose from a food stall. Aya followed her mother between the shops, carrying a bag of notebooks for a community project. She had agreed to interview people who had worked at the market for many years. The noise made it difficult to hear the first seller’s reply. Aya asked him to repeat his answer. As the sun rose, the crowded entrance became brighter, but the sound of engines did not disappear. Inside a small tea shop at the far end of the market, the air was quieter. The owner placed two cups on the counter and spoke slowly about the market’s history. Aya opened her notebook. Outside, another truck sounded its horn, but the owner did not raise his voice. The contrast between the noisy entrance and the quiet shop organizes the passage. It does not mean that every market worker preferred silence or that Aya disliked the market. Her feelings are not directly described. The interviews were only beginning when the passage ended.

At 6:05, most of the lights in the school science building were off. One classroom near the stairs remained bright. Inside, four students were reviewing a poster for the next day’s exhibition. The corridor smelled faintly of floor polish, and a cleaning cart stood near the entrance. Through the glass door, the students could see that the sky had turned dark blue. A clock ticked above the whiteboard. Jun read the final sentence of the poster aloud. Nobody answered immediately. Then Mari pointed to a number and asked where it came from. The group opened a notebook and checked the original measurements. They found that the number had been copied from an earlier draft. After correcting the poster, they switched off the lights at 6:30 and walked together through the quiet corridor. The passage moves from a lit room surrounded by darkness to a dark room after the work ends. The shift marks time and the completion of a task. However, darkness is not automatically evidence of fear, and the brief silence after Jun’s sentence does not prove disagreement. The passage also does not establish that the exhibition itself was successful the following day.

At the end of November, the beach outside the town was almost empty. A cold wind pushed thin lines of foam across the sand. Near the closed visitor center, a single outdoor lamp flickered. Daichi carried a box of old photographs that he had promised to return to a local history group. The group had planned an exhibition about people who worked along the coast, but a storm had damaged the display boards. The photographs were still safe. Daichi walked along the path until he reached the small harbor. A boat’s light moved slowly behind the breakwater. He stopped beside a stone wall, opened the box, and checked that the pictures were dry. In one photograph, a group of workers stood in front of the visitor center when it was newly built. The building in the picture was bright, while the real building beside him was closed and unlit. Daichi closed the box and turned toward town. On the path, the flickering lamp went out for a moment, then shone steadily again. The changes in light invite comparison between past and present, but they do not prove whether the exhibition will eventually take place. Nor do they tell the reader exactly what Daichi felt.

At first, the courtyard is nearly empty, and the sound of rain dominates the scene. Later, the rain stops, sunlight appears, and students return. The atmosphere changes, but the narrator does not directly state that Rina becomes happy. Her feelings must be inferred cautiously from her actions.
