Emi sent a drawing to a student art exhibition before the October deadline. The notice said that shortlisted students would receive an email by November 12. She had revised the drawing three times and kept the postal receipt in her pencil case. On November 10, an email arrived with the subject ‘Thank you for your submission.’ It confirmed that her application had been received, but said that selection notices would be sent separately. Emi nearly told her brother that she had been accepted. She read the email again and stopped. On November 12, she checked her inbox twice. No new message appeared. She put the receipt beside her drawing desk and opened a fresh sketchbook. The story ends there. It does not explain whether a later message arrived, whether an email was delayed, or whether she was rejected. Opening a sketchbook may suggest that Emi intends to continue drawing, but it does not establish the outcome of the exhibition.

The town closed an old wooden bridge after inspectors found damage. Ren wanted it repaired because their grandfather had once worked on it. His younger brother Kai argued that the town should build a safer new crossing. At a public meeting, Ren described the bridge’s history, while Kai asked for estimates of repair costs and long-term safety. The council requested an engineering report. A month later the report was delivered, but no final decision had been announced. A temporary fence stood at each end of the bridge. One morning, Ren stood on the eastern bank and Kai on the western bank. Ren pointed to a new sign reading, ‘Further information will follow.’ Kai looked toward a narrow path where a new bridge might be built. Neither spoke. The narrator does not say which proposal will win, or whether the brothers’ differing views have harmed their relationship. Their positions may echo the disagreement, but a physical distance is not proof of emotional separation.

Aki visited the neighborhood reading room every Wednesday. The room was scheduled to close on Friday while the building was repaired. On the final Wednesday, the librarian gave Aki a small card and explained that the collection might reopen elsewhere. Two possible buildings had been identified, but neither had been approved. Aki wrote three favorite book titles on the back of the card. On Friday she returned her last book. ‘Keep this,’ said the librarian, pointing to the card. ‘We may use it again.’ Outside, workers loaded shelves onto a truck. Aki watched them leave, then passed an empty shop displaying a ‘Space available’ sign. She stopped briefly, folded the card, and continued down the street. The story does not describe her private thoughts at the shop. It also does not establish that the reading room will reopen, or that the shop will become its new location. The card may evoke continuity, but it is not evidence of official approval.

A school history club prepared an exhibition about a former neighborhood cinema. Its first label claimed that a builder named in an old poster had designed the building in 1952. A visitor brought a newspaper clipping from 1953 that mentioned a different architect. Neither source identified which design was ultimately used. The students checked the documents and changed ‘designed by’ to ‘associated with the construction of.’ On the exhibition’s opening day, an elderly visitor read the corrected label twice. She reached into her bag and produced a photograph showing several people standing outside the cinema. ‘This might help,’ she said. The club leader asked permission to scan it, and the visitor agreed. On the back of the photograph there were no names. The story ends as the scanner light moves across the image. The picture is a possible clue, not a confirmed answer. The reader cannot conclude that either architect was responsible until further evidence appears, and the text never shows that further evidence.

慶英会モデル(短編A):Emi received confirmation that her drawing had arrived, but the message did not tell her whether she had been selected. The story ends without showing a final decision. Although Emi opens a new sketchbook, the reader cannot conclude that she has been accepted or rejected. The ending leaves the result uncertain while showing that Emi is still drawing.
