NEW TREASURE Stage5 Further Readingのtone(語り手の語調・態度)とmood(場面が読者に与える雰囲気)は同じではありません。
skeptical(懐疑的)、sympathetic(共感的)、respectful(敬意ある)、ironic(皮肉的)など。 uneasy(落ち着かない)、cheerful(明るい)、quiet(静かな)など。
“What an impressively reliable system!”
Our school had bought a new electronic noticeboard for the library entrance. The first week, the screen showed the correct opening hours, and everyone praised its bright colors. ‘At last,’ our newspaper editor wrote, ‘a system that will never confuse anyone.’ On Monday morning, however, the screen displayed ‘CLOSED’ while the library doors were open. Three students turned away before a librarian noticed the error. I watched the librarian switch the display off, place a handwritten notice on the door, and call the maintenance office. The screen then restarted and showed the correct hours. ‘What an impressively reliable system,’ I wrote in my notes, just as a fourth student asked whether the library was open. My choice of words was deliberately ironic, not sincere praise. The librarian did not blame the confused students. She explained that the information on the screen had been outdated and arranged for staff to check the display each morning. On Tuesday, the handwritten notice and the electronic display agreed. The library did not report how many visitors had been confused in total. The entrance felt uncertain while the sign was wrong, but the narrator’s tone was skeptical toward the exaggerated promise of a flawless system.

The winter assembly hall was cold enough that Yui could see a faint cloud when she breathed. She had transferred to the school only a week earlier. Rows of chairs faced the stage, and the microphone squealed as a teacher tested it. Yui stood beside the wall, holding her folded program. It was easy to imagine that the room felt intimidating. The narrator, however, did not describe Yui as strange or weak for standing alone. Instead, it noticed how carefully she studied the seating chart and how quietly she thanked a volunteer who offered help. A student named Ren approached and said, ‘You can sit near the door if that is easier.’ He did not ask why she looked uncomfortable. After the assembly, Yui learned that the school had a small writing club, and she asked when it met. Ren found the schedule and wrote the meeting room on her program. The hall remained cold, and the story did not claim that Yui suddenly felt at home. Its atmosphere could still feel uneasy, but the narrator’s tone toward Yui was attentive and sympathetic rather than mocking. The passage shows practical kindness without treating one helpful interaction as proof that all her difficulties were solved.

The school science club received an award for its garden project, and the newspaper prepared a report. One draft began, ‘The greatest scientific achievement in the history of our school was announced today.’ The editor crossed out that sentence. She did not deny that the students had worked hard or that the award mattered to them. She simply asked what evidence could support such a comparison with every previous project. The corrected article described the actual award, the committee’s reasons for recognizing the garden, and the work still unfinished. The club had built twelve planting boxes, but water-use measurements were available for only eight. When the students heard that the article would not call their project the greatest ever, some looked disappointed. The editor wrote, ‘A prize deserves to be reported clearly. It does not need an invented historical ranking to be worth celebrating.’ Her tone was measured and respectful, not hostile. The atmosphere at the announcement had been cheerful; later, the editing room became quiet and thoughtful. The article was published with the exact award title and the incomplete measurements noted. It did not claim that the garden’s long-term environmental impact had been established.

During a school geography project, students designed a map of routes from the station to the sports center. The first version displayed a bright red line and described it as ‘the only sensible route.’ A wheelchair user asked whether the route included stairs. The team checked and discovered that it did. The writer of the original caption, Kaito, felt embarrassed. In the first draft of his revised note he wrote, ‘Unfortunately, we were forced to add a longer route.’ His teacher pointed out that the language treated accessibility as an inconvenience rather than a necessary feature. Kaito looked again at the map. The step-free path was 700 meters, while the staircase shortcut was 520 meters. He rewrote the note: ‘Two routes are shown. The 700-meter route is step-free; the 520-meter route contains stairs.’ The description no longer praised one path as universally best or presented the other as a regrettable addition. The room remained busy and slightly tense while the team corrected the display. In the final paragraph, the narrator says that Kaito learned to choose words that let readers make an informed decision. The tone shifts from defensive to constructive, while the map’s practical information becomes clearer. The school had not measured the actual travel time on either route.

The digital notice displayed an incorrect opening status on Monday.(月曜に電子表示が誤った開館状態を示した)。 So much for the promise that the system would never confuse anyone.(誰も混乱させないという約束は何だったのか)。
Yui studied the seating chart carefully and thanked the volunteer who offered her help.
