NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage4・5の科学系Read・探究Projectで、英語のscatter plot(散布図)を読むときは、右上がり・右下がりという方向だけでなく、linear(直線的)・nonlinear(非線形)・outlier(外れた点)・association(関連)・causation(因果)を区別する必要があります。

Scatter plot

Original fictional dataset: A fictional classroom records five paired observations: (x,y) = (1,6), (2,8), (3,10), (4,12) and (5,14). The horizontal axis is x (a fictional index), and the vertical axis is y (a fictional score). These invented data lie exactly on the line y = 2x + 4. The pairs are not evidence that changing x actually causes a change in y in the real world.
| x | y |
|---|---|
| 1 | 6 |
| 2 | 8 |
| 3 | 10 |
| 4 | 12 |
| 5 | 14 |
問1:What variables go on the horizontal and vertical axes?
問2:How many paired observations are shown?
問3:State the y value when x is 3.
問4:Describe the overall direction of association.
問5:Calculate the change in y from x = 1 to x = 2.
問6:Calculate the slope of the line through the points.
問7:What is the y-intercept of y = 2x + 4?
問8:Is the line an exact description of these five invented points?
問9:Does this pattern prove that x causes y?
問10:Write a careful English description of the dataset.
Original fictional dataset: Another invented dataset consists of (x,y) = (5,20), (10,18), (15,16), (20,14) and (25,12). The x variable is a fictional quantity labelled ‘minutes’, and y is an arbitrary exercise score. The points lie on y = 22 − 0.4x for the recorded range. The labels do not establish that more minutes in a real activity would reduce any student’s score, and the data do not include x = 30.
| x | y |
|---|---|
| 5 | 20 |
| 10 | 18 |
| 15 | 16 |
| 20 | 14 |
| 25 | 12 |
問11:What trend appears as x increases?
問12:How much does x increase between consecutive observations?
問13:How much does y change between consecutive observations?
問14:Calculate the slope between the first and last points.
問15:What line fits all five recorded points?
問16:What is y when x = 20?
問17:Is the association positive or negative?
問18:Was a y value observed for x = 30?
問19:May the writer claim that the same trend always holds beyond x = 25?
問20:Write a concise report paragraph.
Original fictional dataset: A fictional set of five x–y observations is (1,8), (2,5), (3,4), (4,5) and (5,8). The y value is lowest at the central x-value and higher on both sides. This is a U-shaped relationship, not a monotonic straight-line trend. In these symmetric invented data, the Pearson linear correlation coefficient is exactly zero, despite a clear nonlinear pattern. The dataset is only illustrative; no real-world causal mechanism was investigated.
| x | y |
|---|---|
| 1 | 8 |
| 2 | 5 |
| 3 | 4 |
| 4 | 5 |
| 5 | 8 |
問21:What is the smallest recorded y value?
問22:At which x value does that minimum occur?
問23:What y values occur at x = 1 and x = 5?
問24:Describe the pattern as x moves from 1 to 5.
問25:Is this a positive straight-line trend?
問26:Is it a negative straight-line trend?
問27:What is the average of the five y values?
問28:What is the Pearson linear correlation in this particular symmetric dataset?
問29:Does zero linear correlation prove there is no relationship at all?
問30:Write a report distinguishing linear and nonlinear association.
Original fictional dataset: Five fictional pairs are (1,2), (2,4), (3,6), (4,8) and (5,25). The first four points lie exactly on y = 2x. For x = 5, that line would give y = 10, but the observed value is 25. The origin of the unusual final observation has not been investigated. The full dataset is not evidence of a real-world treatment effect. A line connecting the first and last points is not automatically the fitted least-squares regression line.
| x | y |
|---|---|
| 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 4 |
| 3 | 6 |
| 4 | 8 |
| 5 | 25 |
問31:How many points are in the dataset?
問32:What rule describes the first four points?
問33:What would that rule predict at x = 5?
問34:What y value was actually recorded at x = 5?
問35:How far is the last recorded point above that line?
問36:Does that make the final point a confirmed measurement error?
問37:May the last point be deleted only because it looks unusual?
問38:What is the mean of all five recorded y values?
問39:Is the slope of the line joining the first and last points automatically a regression slope?
問40:Write an evidence-based summary of the unusual pattern.

解9:No. A scatter plot can describe association without proving causation.
10:The five plotted pairs rise from (1, 6) to (5, 14) and lie exactly on the line y = 2x + 4. Within these observations, y increases by two units for every one-unit increase in x. This is a perfect positive linear pattern in an invented dataset, not evidence that x causes y in a real population. The chart’s axes should be labelled clearly, and predictions outside the five recorded x-values would require additional assumptions.

19:No. The observed data cannot establish the relationship outside the sampled range.
20:Five fictional observations form a downward-sloping straight-line pattern: x rises from 5 to 25 minutes while y falls from 20 to 12. Each increase of five in x corresponds to a decrease of two in y, giving a slope of −0.4 units per minute. The points match y = 22 − 0.4x over the observed range. However, no value was collected at x = 30, and the dataset does not establish a causal relationship or guarantee that the same line applies outside the recorded interval.

22:It occurs at x = 3.
23:Both endpoints have y = 8.
24:The y values fall toward the centre and then rise, forming a U-shaped pattern.
25:No. The values do not rise continuously with x.

28:The Pearson linear correlation is zero.
29:No. The scatter plot displays a systematic nonlinear U-shaped relationship.
30:The five fictional points follow a U-shaped pattern: y falls from 8 to 4 as x rises from 1 to 3, then returns to 8 by x = 5. The Pearson linear correlation is zero in this symmetric dataset, but the points still display a clear nonlinear association. Therefore, describing the data as showing ‘no relationship’ would be misleading. A scatter plot is important because a single linear correlation coefficient can miss curved patterns, and no causal explanation is established here.
31:There are five paired observations.
32:The first four points satisfy y = 2x.

解33:It would predict y = 10.

39:No. The slope through two selected points is not necessarily the least-squares slope for all five points.
40:Four of the five fictional points fall on the line y = 2x. At x = 5, however, the observed y value is 25 rather than the value of 10 predicted by that line, a difference of 15 units. The unusual observation might affect any fitted trend, but its cause has not been investigated. It should not be removed automatically. A report should identify the point, explain the departure from the first-four-point pattern and avoid claiming that a causal change occurred.
