A fictional school library tested a new shelf-label system. In the first test, ten students using the old labels needed a mean of 84 seconds to find a particular book. Another ten students using the new labels needed a mean of 61 seconds. The librarian wrote that the new signs had reduced searching time by 23 seconds. However, the two groups did not have identical experience: the second group had visited the library more often. Two weeks later, another teacher tried to repeat the test with twenty new students, assigning each student a label system by drawing a slip of paper. The ten students using the old labels averaged 68 seconds, while the ten using the new labels averaged 66. The second test showed a much smaller difference. Neither teacher knew whether the students were equally familiar with the selected book. They therefore did not treat a single difference in means as final proof that one label system would help every student. They agreed to document which books were used, how students were assigned and the rules for stopping the timer before conducting another trial.

A class studied two methods of reading English passages. Twenty students chose to underline linking words, while twenty preferred taking summary notes. After one week, eighteen underlining students and nineteen note-taking students completed a new reading exercise. The underlining group averaged 8.0 points and the note-taking group averaged 8.3 out of ten. Two students in the first group and one in the second were absent. A poster initially reported that all forty students had completed the exercise. The teacher corrected it to thirty-seven valid scores. When the activity was repeated with a different passage, the underlining group averaged 8.4 and the note-taking group averaged 8.1 among students with valid scores. These results did not establish that either method was best. The exercises were not identical, students had selected their own methods, and the class did not report how long each student studied. The teacher recommended recording assignment, test difficulty, study time and missing data before making a stronger claim.

A student group designed a printed instruction sheet for a fictional audio tour at a school festival. They wanted visitors to reach the first stop without asking for help. In the initial test, fifteen of twenty visitors reached the correct stop using a short instruction sheet. The students concluded that the guide worked for 75 percent of visitors. Another group tried to repeat the activity on the following Saturday. It used a revised map, and the entrance had been moved to the other side of the hall. Seventeen of twenty visitors reached the stop correctly. A student called the result a confirmation that the guide was now better. The second group explained that changing both the map and the entrance made the comparison unclear. A visitor’s previous experience of the building might also influence success. The groups agreed to preserve both versions, define what counted as reaching the correct stop, and record whether visitors had been to the school before. They also planned to allow participants to report accessibility difficulties instead of measuring success only through arrival at the destination.

The fictional Westhill Science Club measured how many books were borrowed from a classroom shelf over five school days. Its original notebook listed daily counts of 12, 15, 9, 14 and 10. The students correctly calculated a total of 60 and a mean of 12 per day. However, a poster displayed a mean of 15 because its author had divided the full five-day total of 60 by only four days, accidentally leaving Friday out of the day count (60 ÷ 4 = 15). The correct calculation is 60 ÷ 5 = 12. Another student checked the original notebook and discovered the mismatch. The team corrected the poster, kept the previous version in its revision history and wrote down the formula: total divided by five valid days. A visiting class could now reproduce the arithmetic from the published daily numbers even though it had not observed the original lending events. The teacher emphasized that reproducing the arithmetic was not the same as independently repeating the book-counting study. An independent repeat would require the same counting rules, a clear observation period and a way to identify double-counted loans.

4: The new-label group had more library experience.

解答5: Drawing slips of paper.

9: No; the reported mean differences were 23 and 2 seconds.

10: Books used, student assignment and timing rules.

解答16: 8.3 out of ten.

18: No; the relative order changed.

19: Passage difficulty and self-selection of study methods.

20: Assignment, difficulty, study time and missing data.

解答21: Fifteen of twenty.

解答23: Seventeen of twenty.

26: The map and the entrance location.

28: Whether visitors had visited the building before.

29: What counts as reaching the correct first stop.

解答30: Accessibility difficulties reported by participants.

解答31: 12, 15, 9, 14 and 10.

解答35: The original notebook.

36: To keep a transparent revision history.

37: The arithmetic based on the published counts.

解答39: Clear counting rules and observation periods.

40: A reproducible report should show the original counts, the calculation and its correction history.

The results differed between the two trials.(2試行の結果は異なった)。However, the conditions were not fully comparable.(ただし条件は完全には比較可能でなかった)。A further trial should record the same measures under clearly defined conditions.(追加の試行では同じ指標と明確な条件を記録すべきだ)。
