NEW TREASURE Stage4・5の長文でrather than・instead of・as opposed to・in preference toが出たら、まず「どちらを選んだのか」「単に比較しただけなのか」を分けてください。instead ofは代わりの行動・置換を述べ、rather thanは選択・優先・対比に広く使われます。一方、as opposed toは比較上の対立を示すだけで、実際に方法を変えたとは限りません。定期テストや英作文で差がつくのは、この意味の違いに加え、後ろに置く動詞の形です。

rather than・instead of・as opposed toの使い分け
- rather than：「〜よりむしろ」「〜するのではなく」。選択、強調、比較など幅広く使える。例：Choose evidence rather than guesses.
- instead of：「〜の代わりに」。前置詞ofの後に名詞・動名詞を置く。例：We checked the source instead of guessing.
- as opposed to：「〜とは対照的に」。比較対象を際立たせる。実際の置換を意味するとは限らない。例：The article discusses causes as opposed to solutions.
- in preference to：「〜よりも〜を好んで」。比較的改まった選好表現で、名詞や動名詞を続ける。例：She chose the original study in preference to a summary.
書き換えの要点：rather thanは不定詞や動名詞など前後の構造に応じて形が変わります。instead of to doは通常不適切で、instead of doingとします。すべての文で機械的に一語置換できるわけではありません。
英文読解で「A rather than B」はAを重視しBを退ける方向を示すことがありますが、「A as opposed to B」はAとBを対比しただけのことがあります。この違いを無視すると、設問の「実施した／比較した／選択した」の判断を間違えます。

第4部｜独自長文2題8問
読解A｜紙の教材とオンライン教材：A language school compared printed practice sheets with online exercises. The report described the advantages of each method, as opposed to announcing that one should replace the other. Printed sheets helped students focus without notifications. Online exercises, by contrast, offered immediate feedback. The teachers decided to combine the two methods rather than choose just one. They used printed sheets for complex reading passages and short digital quizzes for review. Instead of making every assignment digital, the school kept a small paper component. The school planned to check students’ progress after eight weeks before deciding whether the new combination should become permanent.

読解B｜環境調査と意思決定：Students investigated waste reduction at their school. They measured the weight of discarded paper over two weeks, rather than relying on guesses about how much was thrown away. They also interviewed staff who handled recycling. The project compared different types of waste, as opposed to claiming that a single cause explained every change. At the final meeting, students recommended placing clearer signs near collection bins. They preferred a small trial in one hallway to a schoolwide change without testing. Instead of assuming that the signs would work, they proposed measuring the results for one month. Their conclusion was deliberately limited: the signs might help, but evidence was still needed.

問1：instead of。外出する代わりに自宅にいたことを示します。後ろのgoingは動名詞です。
問2：rather than。短期利益ではなく長期効果に焦点を当てる対比です。
問3：as opposed to。「都市部の学校に対して地方の学校を」という比較対象を示します。
問4：in preference to。他人の要約より一次資料を好んで選んだ、という選好を表します。
問5：rewrite。chose to revise … rather than rewrite … という並列です。
問6：making。instead ofのofは前置詞で、動作を示すなら動名詞にします。
問7：rather than。訳だけに依存するのではなく図を使ったという対比です。
問8：as opposed to。費用の比較と方法を切り替える決定は異なる、と対置しています。

問12：文章の長さより明確さです。AとBは名詞同士で対比されています。

問14：方法を評価することであり、最良の方法を証明することではありません。
問15：小規模な研究課題です。後者の長い発表より前者を好んだことが明示されています。
問16：誤りです。as opposed toは対象の対比であり、実際の置換を必ずしも意味しません。

問17：“He stayed at the library instead of going home.”。前置詞ofの後は動名詞にします。
問18：“I prefer to revise the chart rather than repeat the survey.” または “I prefer revising the chart to repeating the survey.” とします。構造をそろえます。
問19：“Rather than wait, we began the discussion.”。文頭ではrather than waitが自然です。
問20：“The report compared the new policy with the old one.”。instead ofは置換の意味なので、比較ならcompare A with Bにします。
問21：“She chose accuracy over speed.” または “She chose accuracy rather than speed.”。単にas opposed toも対比はできますが、選好にはrather thanが明瞭です。
問22：“We will write a summary rather than copy the entire passage.”。比較する二項を異なる行動にします。
問23：“The teacher used examples rather than explaining the definition.” または “The teacher chose to use examples rather than explain the definition.”。前後の動詞構造を対応させます。

日本語→英語①：「私は全体を暗記するのではなく、主張と根拠を確認した」 → I checked the claim and evidence rather than memorizing the whole passage.
日本語→英語②：「教師は講義の代わりに小テストを実施した」 → The teacher gave a short quiz instead of a lecture.
日本語→英語③：「この報告書は結論ではなく、方法を比較している」 → The report compares methods as opposed to presenting final conclusions.
英文構造では、選択を述べるのか、置換を述べるのか、比較するだけなのかを最初に判定しましょう。誤答したものは翌日・4日後・7日後・14日後に英文を見ずに言い直します。
よくある質問
Q. rather than と instead of は同義ですか？
重なる場面はありますが、完全に同義ではありません。instead ofは代替関係が明瞭で、rather thanは優先・対比まで広がります。また後続する語形も異なるため、書き換え時は文全体を見ます。
Q. as opposed to を「〜の代わりに」と訳してはいけませんか？
文脈によって訳が重なることはあります。ただし、比較しただけなのか実際に置換したのかは区別してください。特に長文の内容一致では重要です。
Q. Stage4・5のテストでどこまで覚えればよいですか？
単語の日本語訳より、語順と文脈で意味を判定できることが重要です。使用教科書の進度と学校の出題範囲に合わせ、本文・Workbook・初見英作文を区別して練習してください。
