NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Stage4・5の論説文でon the contrary / on the other hand / by contrast / in contrast / converselyをすべて「一方で」「逆に」と訳すと、筆者が何を否定し、何を比べているのかを読み違えます。特にon the contraryは先ほどの見解・印象を打ち消して反対を強調し、on the other handは別の側面を示す表現です。by contrastは異なる集団・方式などの比較に使われます。

似ている5表現は、前後の関係を問うと区別できる
- on the contrary：直前の否定・誤解を打ち消し「それどころか正反対」を強調。
- on the other hand：同じ対象の別の側面、または二つの異なる意見を並列して検討する。
- by contrast / in contrast：比較する二対象の違いを際立たせる。集団・時点・地域・方式を比べる際に多い。
- conversely：反対方向の状況・逆の見方を提示する。ただし前の文だけで数学的な逆命題まで証明されたとは限らない。
たとえばThe study was not a failure. On the contrary, it revealed an important pattern.は失敗という見方の否定です。一方、The study was useful. On the other hand, it was expensive.は有用性と費用の両方が成り立つ二面性です。on the contraryを後者で使うと、先の有用性を打ち消すように響き、不自然になります。
Cambridge Dictionaryの公式文法「Contrasts」も、これらを別の機能を持つ対比表現として説明しています。正解選択では前の文が否定された見方か、併存する利点か、別グループの数字かを先に判定しましょう。

第1部｜on the contrary：直前の見方を否定して正反対を述べる
『それどころか、実際には反対だ』と前の否定・誤解を打ち消す時に使います。単なる『一方では』とは区別してください。

第2部｜on the other hand：同じ対象の別の側面を示す
利益と不利益、方法Aと方法B、双方の見方などを並列して比べます。前に述べた事実を完全に否定する必要はありません。

第3部｜by contrast・in contrast：異なる対象を比較
二つの集団・時点・方式の違いに焦点を当てます。相手の発言を打ち消すon the contraryとは区別します。データを並べる際の主語にも注意しましょう。

第4部｜conversely・総合問題：逆方向の見方と論理的な注意
converselyは前後を逆に考えた対照的な状況を示します。ただし数学的に『AならB』が『BならA』を証明するわけではありません。英文が明示した範囲だけを読みます。

全32問・正解と判断根拠
選択語句だけを暗記せず、「前の文が否定か肯定か」「主語が同じか別か」「二つの事実は同時に成り立つか」を確認してください。前後の文を矢印で対応させると要約の正確さも上がります。
第1部の解答
問1：満席でした。poorly attendedという印象を否定して逆の事実を強調しています。
問2：されていません。逆に重大な疑問を生んだと述べています。
問3：節約目的ではなく、追加支出を必要としたという反対の情報です。
問4：On the other hand, tickets are expensive. とすると、魅力と費用という二つの側面を対比できます。
問5：閉館したとの誤解に対し、実際には開館時間を延長していました。
問6：強く支持しています。反対ではないというだけではなく積極的支持です。
問7：いいえ。応募件数が2倍となり、減少とは逆です。
問8：警告を無視せず、直ちに計画を修正しました。
第2部の解答
問9：軽量である一方、電池持ちが短いという二面性です。
問10：移動時間の節約と安定した通信環境の必要性です。
問11：費用が安い点と導入に時間がかかる点です。
問12：両立します。利益を認めつつリスクも指摘しています。
問13：議論が増える可能性と、活動の選択肢が少なくなる点です。
問14：駅から遠いが開館時間が長いという対比です。
問15：意味しません。精度と所要時間は別の評価軸です。
問16：矛盾しません。方針の手段への不賛成と目標への賛成は両立します。
第3部の解答
問17：School Aです。30人対12人という異なる対象の比較です。
問18：午後の部。満席の午前と対比しています。
問19：用いた記録手段です。第1回は紙、第2回はタブレットでした。
問20：南地区です。北は減少、南は増加です。
問21：大人数の講義と少人数のゼミです。後者は議論を促すと述べています。
問22：25点です。ただしCを特にAと比べたのかBと比べたのかは文脈に依存します。
問23：調査の実施方法です。最初はオンライン、後の面接は対面でした。
問24：市は紙ごみ削減、隣町は増加。地名の主語を入れ替えないことです。
第4部の解答
問25：紙の書籍を好む生徒と、音声でより学びやすい生徒の傾向です。
問26：mayを使う後半は可能性です。大型表示が必ず改善を生むと断定できません。
問27：第1は速度優先で精度低下、第2は精度優先で速度低下です。
問28：無効と示したのではなく、複数の利点を確認したという意味です。

問31：いいえ。前半は可能性を述べるだけで、進歩が起きた理由が毎日の学習であるとは証明できません。

初見英文A：電子教材に対する相反する評価
慶英会独自英文A：Some parents feared that the school would eliminate printed materials immediately. On the contrary, the school said that printed copies would remain available during a trial period. On the one hand, digital notices could be updated quickly. On the other hand, families without a stable connection might have difficulty accessing them. By contrast, paper notices did not require a device, although they took longer to distribute. The committee concluded that both methods should be tested before making a final decision.
解説：on the contraryは『紙教材を即時廃止する』という懸念を打ち消し、試行中は紙も利用できると訂正。on the one hand / other handは電子連絡の速度と接続環境の課題を併置。by contrastは紙とデジタルの違いを示します。最後は両方を試すという結論であり、全面デジタル化が決定したとは読めません。
初見英文B：二地域の資料比較
慶英会独自英文B：In District A, library visits rose after opening hours were extended. By contrast, District B recorded little change over the same period. Some readers interpreted this as proof that longer hours always increased attendance. The report did not support such a broad claim. On the contrary, it noted that population changes and local events had not been examined. On the other hand, it did not dismiss extended hours as useless; it recommended a larger study. Conversely, lower attendance does not necessarily prove that opening hours should be reduced.
解説：by contrastはA地区とB地区の観察結果を比較します。on the contraryは『営業時間延長が必ず来館を増やすと証明された』という強い主張を否定。on the other handは延長策を完全に否定するわけでもないという補足です。最後のconverselyは来館減少から短縮を直ちに結論できないと注意しています。本文は因果の確定ではなく、検証不足を示しています。
英文Bの要約モデル：比較と留保を同時に残す
慶英会オリジナル要約：Library visits increased in District A after longer opening hours were introduced, while District B showed little change. However, the report did not treat the difference as proof of a universal effect because other possible factors had not been examined. It recommended further research rather than rejecting the policy.
要約では地域別の差、一般化を拒む理由、追加検証の提案を残しました。『A地区の効果が実証された』『B地区の来館が減った』『政策の廃止を主張した』といった本文にない断定は避けます。
定期テスト7日前の解き直し手順
1日目は問1〜8で否定・誤解の打ち消しを判定。2日目は問9〜16で二面性をプラス・マイナスに整理。3日目は問17〜24で比較対象と数値に印を付けます。4日目は問25〜32でconverselyと論理的な逆命題を区別。5日目は英文Aの接続表現をすべて機能別に分類し、6日目は英文Bを60語程度で英語要約、7日目は最初に間違えた問題だけ全根拠を説明しながら再テストします。

Q. on the contraryとon the other handはどちらも『逆に』ですか？ A. 訳は重なることがありますが、前者は直前の見方を打ち消す機能、後者は異なる側面を追加する機能が中心です。
Q. by contrastとin contrastは同じですか？ A. どちらも対比を示し、多くの文脈で置き換え可能です。ただし語の配置や後続するwith/toなど、構文を確認してください。
