nowhere near as … asは「〜には遠く及ばない」、not nearly as … asは「〜ほどでは全くない・差が大きい」、far+比較級は「はるかに〜」を表します。

nowhere near・not nearly as・far more/lessの違い

The classroom is nowhere near as large as the hall.
not nearly as+形容詞+as比較対象より大幅に低いPlan A is not nearly as expensive as Plan B.
far+比較級はるかに〜The new room is far bigger.
The task takes far less time.
We have nowhere near enough evidence.
not quite as+形容詞+as完全には同じ程度でないThe second room is not quite as quiet.

第2部|独自英文A(問17〜22)

Two rooms with different capacities(架空の学習事例)

A fictional school committee compared two possible rooms for a public lecture. The small classroom held twenty people, while the main hall held one hundred. One student wrote that the classroom was ‘not quite as large as’ the hall. The teacher asked for a stronger description, because the capacity difference was substantial: the classroom was nowhere near as large as the hall. The group had received forty-five expressions of interest, so the smaller room could not hold everyone at once. The committee considered using the hall, but it had not yet confirmed the booking. The room sizes were recorded facts; the final venue was still under review.

第3部|独自英文B(問23〜28)

A study-time comparison(架空の学習事例)

In a fictional reading programme, students using Method A needed an average of fifteen minutes for a task, while those using Method B needed forty minutes. The organiser wrote that Method A was ‘far faster’ in this trial. The statement accurately described the difference in time, but it did not establish that Method A improved comprehension. The two groups had not taken the same comprehension test. A student also wrote that fifteen minutes was ‘nowhere near as long as’ forty minutes. The teacher accepted the description but asked students to show the exact figures. The club planned a second comparison with the same text difficulty and a common test.

第4部|独自英文C(問29〜34)

Not nearly enough information(架空の学習事例)

A fictional student newspaper received twelve responses to an online questionnaire about school lunches. The school had nearly eight hundred students, so the editor wrote that twelve responses were nowhere near enough to make a reliable claim about the preferences of all students. Seven of the twelve respondents said that they wanted more vegetables, and five did not. The newspaper could describe the twelve responses accurately but could not assume that the same percentages applied to the entire school. The editor proposed collecting more answers and checking whether students from different grades were represented. No revised survey had been conducted by the publication date.

第5部|独自英文D(問35〜40)

A cost estimate that was too small(架空の学習事例)

A fictional school media club wanted to buy recording equipment for a podcast. The first budget allowed 4,000 yen, but the actual quotation for all required equipment was 17,500 yen. The treasurer wrote that the available budget was nowhere near enough. Another member proposed using the school’s existing microphone to reduce the cost, but permission to borrow it had not yet been granted. The group also noted that the initial budget was not nearly as large as the full quoted cost. The difference was 13,500 yen. The club decided not to place an order until it had a revised plan and permission for any borrowed equipment.
