- Code / coding:
- Multiple coding:
Original fictional data: Eight fictional volunteers answered an open-ended question about a school library. The responses were: C1 ‘I need quieter seats.’ C2 ‘Could the library open later?’ C3 ‘Quiet rooms should stay open later.’ C4 ‘More chairs near windows would help.’ C5 ‘The chairs are comfortable, but closing time is early.’ C6 ‘There is too much noise at lunch.’ C7 ‘Later opening would help.’ C8 ‘The tables are crowded.’ The class uses three codes: Q for requests concerning quiet or noise, H for opening hours, and S for seating or chairs. The rule permits more than one code per comment; this is a teaching exercise, and the eight volunteers do not represent the whole school.
問1:What is the qualitative data type in this exercise?
問2:Which codes should be assigned to comment C3?
問3:Which codes should be assigned to comment C5?
問4:Which comments receive the quiet/noise code Q?
問5:How many comments receive the opening-hours code H?
問6:How many comments receive the seating code S?
問7:What is the sum of the three code frequencies?
問8:Does ten code assignments mean ten different respondents?
問9:Can the frequency of code H establish that school-wide demand is high?
問10:Write a concise, cautious qualitative findings paragraph.
Original fictional data: Twelve fictional respondents rated a reading corner from one to five stars. Two gave one star, three gave two stars, four gave three stars, two gave four stars, and one gave five stars. Separately, the organisers kept three optional anonymous written comments: ‘The signs are hard to read,’ ‘I would like a quieter table,’ and ‘The books are easy to find.’ No link between a comment and its author’s numeric rating was retained. The survey was voluntary and did not record changes in reading scores. The class wants to report the rating distribution and discuss the content of comments without treating three comments as the opinions of all twelve people.
問11:How many people submitted numeric ratings?
問12:How many respondents gave exactly three stars?
問13:Calculate the total of the twelve star values.
問14:Calculate the arithmetic mean rating.
問15:What kind of information do the three written responses provide?
問16:Can we identify the ratings of the three commenters?
問17:Can we claim that all twelve respondents wanted quieter tables?
問18:Does the numeric mean show which signs are difficult to read?
問19:Can this survey establish that reading scores improved?
問20:Write a balanced description combining both types of evidence.
Original fictional data: Two fictional students independently applied the same yes/no codebook to ten anonymous remarks about school signs. They agreed on seven remarks and disagreed on three. The coding guide did not clearly define whether a comment about colour contrast belonged in the ‘readability’ category. The team has not yet resolved the three disagreements or assigned final consensus codes. It plans to discuss borderline examples, revise the codebook, and recode all ten remarks under the revised rules. A simple observed agreement proportion can be calculated, but this is not the same as a chance-corrected agreement statistic or proof that the codes measure accessibility well.
問21:How many comments did the coders classify?
問22:On how many comments did they agree?
問23:What is the observed agreement percentage?
問24:What is the disagreement percentage?
問25:What was ambiguous in the codebook?
問26:Have final consensus codes been assigned to the three disputed remarks?
問27:What should the team do before reporting final frequencies?
問28:Does 70 percent simple agreement equal a chance-corrected agreement statistic?
問29:Does agreement on codes alone prove that accessibility was measured validly?
問30:Write a cautious description of the coding process.
Original fictional data: A fictional school invited sixty students to comment on an optional lunchtime activity. Thirty-six submitted the closed question, and twenty-seven of those selected ‘useful’. An optional open comment box received ten comments, not necessarily from different groups. A basic exclusive coding exercise assigned six comments to ‘the activity was too long’ and four to ‘the schedule was inconvenient’. The ten comments represent only those who wrote in the box, not all thirty-six closed-question respondents or all sixty invitees. No student outcome or test performance was measured. The school has not checked whether the two themes reflect the full range of concerns.
問31:Calculate the closed-question response rate.
問32:Calculate the useful share among closed-question respondents.
問33:What fraction of all invitees is known to have selected ‘useful’?
問34:How many optional comments were recorded?
問35:How many comments were coded as ‘too long’?
問36:How many comments were coded as ‘schedule inconvenient’?
問37:Are six comments evidence that six of all sixty students found the activity too long?
問38:Do the twenty-seven ‘useful’ choices prove learning gains?
問39:What should be reviewed about the two-code scheme?
問40:Write a balanced mixed-data interpretation.

1:The data are eight open-ended written comments.
2:C3 should receive Q and H.
3:C5 should receive S and H.
4:C1, C3 and C6 receive Q.
5:Four comments receive H: C2, C3, C5 and C7.
6:Three comments receive S: C4, C5 and C8.
7:The frequencies sum to ten code assignments.
8:No. Eight people responded, and some comments received two codes.
9:No. Four coded comments from eight volunteers do not establish school-wide demand.
10:Eight volunteers supplied open-ended comments about the library. Using a teaching codebook, the class assigned the quiet/noise code to three comments, opening hours to four and seating to three. Because C3 and C5 contained two themes each, the ten code assignments came from only eight comments. The most frequently assigned code in this small set concerned opening hours, but this does not establish the most important issue for the whole school. The comments also show that participants could describe several needs in one answer. Wider feedback and clear coding rules would help improve the interpretation.
11:Twelve respondents submitted ratings.
12:Four respondents gave three stars.
13:The total is thirty-three star points.
14:The mean rating is 2.75 out of five.
15:They provide qualitative descriptions of specific experiences and concerns.
16:No. The comments were not linked to individual ratings.
17:No. Only one of the three recorded comments requested a quieter table.
18:No. The mean alone cannot identify that specific problem.
19:No. Reading achievement was not measured.
20:Twelve volunteers rated the reading corner on a five-point scale. Their ratings totalled thirty-three points, producing a mean of 2.75. Three separate anonymous comments discussed signs, quiet seating and ease of finding books. These comments provide examples of participants’ experiences, but they cannot be assigned to particular star ratings, and they do not represent all twelve respondents. The quantitative ratings describe the distribution of scores, while the qualitative comments suggest possible issues to investigate. Neither source measured reading achievement. The school could obtain broader, carefully designed feedback before deciding which changes are most useful.
21:Both coders classified the same ten comments.
22:They agreed on seven comments.
23:The simple observed agreement rate is 70 percent.
24:The disagreement rate is 30 percent.
25:Whether colour-contrast comments belonged in the readability category.
26:No. The disagreements remain unresolved.
27:Clarify the codebook, discuss disagreements and recode the comments.
28:No. It has not been adjusted for agreement that might occur by chance.
29:No. Coding consistency and the meaning of the categories are different questions.
30:Two students independently coded ten anonymous comments about school signs. They agreed on seven comments and differed on three, giving a simple observed agreement rate of 70 percent. One source of disagreement was an unclear rule about colour contrast and readability. The team has not assigned final codes to the disputed remarks. It should refine the codebook, discuss ambiguous cases and review all comments again before publishing final theme counts. The 70 percent figure describes agreement in these ten decisions; it is not a chance-corrected statistic and does not establish that the categories fully capture accessibility concerns.
31:The response rate is 60 percent.
32:Seventy-five percent of respondents selected ‘useful’.
33:Twenty-seven of sixty invitees, or 45 percent, selected ‘useful’.
34:Ten open-ended comments were recorded.
35:Six comments were coded as ‘too long’.
36:Four comments received the schedule code.
37:They show six coded comments, but do not establish the views of all sixty invitees.
38:No. No learning or test outcomes were measured.
39:Whether ‘too long’ and ‘schedule inconvenient’ capture the full range of concerns.
40:Sixty students were invited to comment on a lunchtime activity, and thirty-six answered the closed question, giving a 60 percent response rate. Twenty-seven respondents selected ‘useful’, or 75 percent of those who answered. Ten separate optional comments were coded: six described the activity as too long, and four found the schedule inconvenient. These coded comments cannot be treated as the views of every respondent or invitee. The results provide both counts and examples of concerns, but the coding scheme needs review and no learning outcomes were measured. The school should seek more inclusive feedback before drawing broader conclusions.

A. いいえ。
