as if＋過去形は現在の非現実的な印象に使われます。She acts as if she owned the building.は実際の所有を示しません。
as if＋過去完了は基準時より前の経験を仮想する表現です。He looked as if he had lost his key.は鍵をなくしたように見えたという描写です。
He looks as if he is tired.のように現在形を使った現実的な推測も可能です。as ifの後は必ず仮定法と決めつけないこと。

Original Reading: The science club practiced a presentation about a new water filter. At the first rehearsal, one speaker talked as if he knew every detail of the experiment, but he could not explain how the water samples had been tested. Another member looked as though she had forgotten her notes, although she later found them in her bag. The teacher reminded the group that confidence was helpful, but every claim needed evidence. During the second rehearsal, the team explained the filter’s performance more cautiously. The speaker said that the results looked as if they were promising, but more tests were necessary before claiming the water was safe to drink. After the event, some visitors commented that the students sounded as though they had prepared carefully. The team was pleased but continued checking its data.

科学部は新しい浄水フィルターの発表を練習した。最初の練習では一人が全実験の詳細を知っているかのように話したが、水試料の検査方法を説明できなかった。別の部員はメモを忘れたかのように見えたが、後でかばんから発見した。教師は自信は役立つが、主張には根拠が必要と注意した。二回目には性能をより慎重に説明した。発表者は結果が有望に見えても、飲用安全を主張するには追加検査が必要と述べた。行事後、来訪者の一部は生徒が周到に準備したかのように聞こえたと話した。班は喜んだがデータ確認を続けた。
