NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage4・5のProjectやStage5のCritical Writingで、生徒へのインタビューやアンケートを英語で説明するときは、voluntary participation(任意参加)・informed consent(説明を受けたうえでの同意)・anonymous(匿名)・confidential(機密扱い)を正確に区別する必要があります。
- Informed consent:
- Indirect identification:
Original case study: In a fictional school, a student group plans a survey on after-school study spaces. The draft invitation says, ‘Everyone in this class must answer. Your participation will improve your English grade.’ The survey would ask students about travel time and access to quiet places. The organisers have not obtained the teacher’s permission to use this invitation, and there is no approved arrangement linking participation to grades. Students may reasonably feel pressured when a class activity is described as compulsory. Before inviting participants, the group needs a clear explanation of the purpose, what is requested, whether participation is optional, and how information will be used. The survey has not started.
問1:Identify the two misleading claims in the draft invitation.
問2:What is the intended topic of the survey?
問3:Has the survey already collected responses?
問4:Why might the word ‘must’ create an ethical problem?
問5:Is participation known to improve an English grade?
問6:What should be explained before participants decide?
問7:Rewrite the instruction ‘Everyone must answer’ accurately.
問8:Suggest a respectful option for someone who declines.
問9:Can organisers promise that the survey has school approval?
問10:Write a corrected invitation of about 85–115 English words.
Original case study: A fictional research team says that its school survey is ‘completely anonymous’. However, the proposed form requires each respondent’s student number and stores their email address with the answers. The project lead says that only two authorised teachers will see these records. Access restrictions may protect confidentiality, but they do not make identifying data anonymous. The team wants to send individual follow-up questions, so it may need a system that can link answers to a person. Before proceeding, the team must accurately describe whether information is identifiable, why it is needed, who can access it, and how it will be protected. The project is a proposal, not an approved study.
問11:What identifiers would the draft form collect?
問12:Is the form accurately described as completely anonymous?
問13:What does limiting access to two teachers help protect?
問14:Why might the team want a linking system?
問15:Which information should be explained before participation?
問16:Rewrite ‘No one can identify your answers’ accurately.
問17:Does storing fewer identifiers automatically remove every re-identification risk?
問18:Could a genuinely anonymous design support individual follow-up without a linking mechanism?
問19:Has the team received formal school approval?
問20:Write an accurate description of the survey’s information handling.
Original case study: A fictional school plans a discussion about accessibility in its study rooms. Four volunteers would share their experiences in a small meeting. One student offers a detailed account of difficulties using an entrance. The organisers suggest publishing a word-for-word quotation while deleting the student’s name. However, the story describes a unique situation that classmates might recognise. Removing a name may not remove the risk of indirect identification. The team has not asked permission to publish identifiable quotations, and it has not decided how notes or recordings will be stored. No discussion has taken place. A safer plan needs clear consent, careful selection of necessary details and an honest description of confidentiality limits.
問21:How many volunteers are planned for the discussion?
問22:What detail creates a possible identification risk?
問23:Does deleting the speaker’s name guarantee anonymity?
問24:Has permission for publishing an identifiable quotation been obtained?
問25:Have the storage arrangements for notes and recordings been decided?
問26:Should the organisers promise that no one could ever recognise the person?
問27:Suggest a safer way to discuss the concern publicly.
問28:Why is permission for meeting participation not identical to permission for publication?
問29:Can the group claim that interviews have already produced findings?
問30:Draft a privacy-conscious statement for the planned project.
Original case study: A fictional student research group originally proposed a voluntary anonymous survey of reading habits. Participants would be told that answers were only for a class report. Before any data collection, the organisers decide that they also want to publish selected quotations on a public website and contact respondents later. However, an anonymous design without contact details would not normally support individual follow-up. The new uses are different from those in the draft invitation. The group has not collected answers or obtained permission for the changed plan. It needs to revise its information sheet, clarify whether it will collect identifiers and explain withdrawal options and any limits. School rules and the supervision of minors must be respected.
問31:What was the original planned use of the answers?
問32:Name two newly proposed uses.
問33:Why does individual follow-up conflict with a fully anonymous design?
問34:Has the project collected any participant responses?
問35:Can the group assume that class-report consent also permits public quotations?
問36:What document should be revised before inviting participants?
問37:What must be clarified about identifiers?
問38:What should be explained about withdrawal?
問39:Can the organisers describe the changed plan as already approved?
問40:Write a corrected explanation of the changed research plan.

9:No. Teacher or school approval has not been obtained.
10:We are preparing a voluntary survey about access to after-school study spaces. We would like to ask about travel time and the availability of quiet places to study. The project has not yet received school approval, so no responses are being collected now. If the project is approved, students will receive information about the purpose, questions, intended use of answers and the options for declining or withdrawing, including any limits. Participation will not be presented as a requirement or as a way to raise English grades. Please wait for the school’s approved invitation before deciding whether to take part.
11:It would collect student numbers and email addresses.
12:No. The stored identifiers can link responses to individuals.
13:It can help protect confidentiality, not complete anonymity.

17:No. Other details or combinations of answers may also identify people.
18:Not reliably; individual follow-up normally requires some way to reconnect a person to the response.
19:No. The study is only proposed.
20:This proposed survey would collect student numbers and email addresses alongside students’ answers so that authorised staff could contact respondents again. It therefore would not be completely anonymous. Two designated teachers would have access, but the team must still explain its confidentiality safeguards and why each identifying item is necessary. Students should be told which information would be stored, how it would be used and what withdrawal options would be available. The project has not been approved and no claims about guaranteed privacy should be made. The school should review whether less identifying information could meet the research purpose.
21:Four volunteers are planned.

29:No. The discussion has not taken place.
30:Our school is considering a voluntary discussion about access to study rooms. Four students may be invited to share experiences, but the meeting has not yet taken place. Before collecting comments, we will need school approval and an appropriate consent process that explains participation, note-taking, recording and any possible public use. Removing names from quotations may not prevent classmates from recognising a speaker, so we should not promise complete anonymity. We would aim to report accessibility concerns with as few identifying details as possible and explain who may access any records. No quotation will be described as approved for publication without the necessary permission.
31:Only a class report on reading habits.
32:Public website quotations and later individual follow-up.
33:The team would need a reliable way to reconnect a response with a person.
34:No. No answers have been collected.
35:No. Publication is a different proposed use that must be explained and appropriately authorised.
36:The participant information and consent materials should be revised.
37:Whether names, contact details or linking codes will be collected and why.
38:Available withdrawal options and any limits once data are anonymised or results published.
39:No. They have not obtained permission for it.
40:We originally planned an anonymous survey of reading habits for a class report only. We now wish to consider public quotations and later contact with respondents, but these uses were not included in the first invitation. The project has not begun, and the changed plan has not been approved. Before inviting anyone, we must explain any identifiers needed for follow-up, who could access them, whether quotations might be identifiable and how withdrawal would work. Anonymous responses may be impossible to remove individually after links to respondents have been discarded. The revised plan requires school review and an appropriate consent process before collecting information.
