① prevent＋人・物＋from＋-ing
The storm prevented the event from starting. は嵐によってイベントが始められなかったことを述べます。The teacher prevented students from entering the room. ではenterするのがstudentsです。from to enterやprevent students to enterは標準的な形ではありません。
② keep・stop＋A＋from＋-ing
The loud music kept us from sleeping. は睡眠を妨げること、The guard stopped visitors from touching the exhibits. は接触を阻止することです。会話や地域差でstop A doingという省略形もありますが、学校英作文ではfrom＋動名詞を基本としておくと明確です。
③ avoid doingとprotect A from Bの意味の違い
We avoided making the mistake. は自分たちが誤りを避けたという意味です。一方 The sign prevented visitors from making the mistake. は看板が来場者の誤りを防いだという意味です。protect the sensor from rainならセンサーを雨から守る対象として表します。
④ 受動態be prevented from doing
The closed gate prevented us from entering the building. → We were prevented from entering the building by the closed gate. と書き換えられます。受動態にしてもfrom＋動名詞は残します。
⑤ 予防を目指したことと、効果の実証は別
The council made a map to prevent visitors from getting lost. は「迷子を防ぐ目的で地図を作った」です。実際に全員が迷わなかったかは、来場者の行動記録・確認など別の情報が必要です。Stage3のReadでは設計目的・実施済みの作業・未検証の成果を区別しましょう。
