NEW TREASURE Stage3の長い主語でis / are・has / haveを選ぶとき、動詞の直前の名詞だけで判断してはいけません。 文法問題集やReadで「The list of books is …」「The books that … are …」を読み間違える原因は、主語の核とその修飾句の区別ができていないことです。慶英会独自の40問で、前置詞句・関係詞節・名詞節・挿入句を含む英文の主語と動詞の一致を復習します。
例：The list of books is … では、booksは複数でも主語の核listが単数です。一方、The books that the teacher recommended are … は、関係詞節がどれだけ長くても主節の主語booksが複数です。主語の核へ線を引き、修飾している部分を括弧に入れてから動詞を選んでください。
本教材の英文・問題・解答は慶英会が独自制作したもので、Ｚ会の教科書や学校の試験問題を転載していません。Third Edition Stage3で学ぶ関係詞・名詞節を中心に、既習内容から取り組んでください。
1. 主語の核を見分ける5つの手掛かり
①of＋名詞や過去分詞などは名詞の修飾であり、中心の名詞を置き換えません。②who / which / thatで始まる関係詞節と主節の動詞を別々に探します。③Reading … / Whether … / That … のように句・節全体が主語なら、一般に一つの行為・事柄として単数扱いします。④along with / together with / as well asは通常、主語の核に別の主語を加えません。⑤either A or B / not only A but also Bは通常、動詞に近い主語と一致します。
例外に注意：a number of students（多くの生徒）は複数、the number of students（生徒の人数）は単数です。What節も内容が複数なら文脈によって複数扱いになる場合があります。規則を機械的に暗記せず、主語が何を表しているか確かめてください。

4. 復習：主節と修飾節を分ける
間違えた問題は、まず主節の主語と動詞を抜き出し、関係詞節や前置詞句を消しても主節が成立するかを試します。『One of the computers has …』のように単数のOneを見落とさないこと、『The students who … have …』で関係詞節の動詞と主節の動詞を混同しないことが重要です。翌日に問31〜40の訂正文を隠して再テストしてください。
5. よくある質問
Q. 直前に複数名詞があったら動詞も複数になりますか？
必ずしもそうではありません。The list of books is … の中心名詞はlistです。一方、a number of books are … のように数量表現の規則で複数になることもあります。
Q. What節を主語にしたら必ず単数ですか？
一つの事実・内容を表すときは単数扱いが自然です。ただし指す内容によっては複数扱いが可能な例もあります。この教材では一つの発見内容・説明内容を指す例を扱っています。
Q. as well asをandと同じように扱えますか？
いいえ。The teacher, as well as the students, is … では、主語の核teacherに一致させます。The teacher and the students are … では複数主語です。

主にLesson6の関係代名詞、Lesson7の関係副詞、Lesson8の名詞節や、全Lessonの初見Readで長い主語を読む練習につながります。
