NEW TREASURE Stage3の定期テストで、either A or B・neither A nor B・not only A but also Bの動詞を選ぶときは、基本的に動詞に近い主語に一致させます。 一方、both A and Bは複数扱いです。日本語訳だけで選ばず、語順を見て判断しましょう。
このページの問題と解答は慶英会が独自制作した練習教材です。教科書本文・出版社の問題を転載したものではなく、学校の実際の試験問題でもありません。
最初に覚える4つのルール
both A and B＝AもBも（複数扱い）。either A or B＝AかBのどちらか。neither A nor B＝AもBも…ない。not only A but also B＝AだけでなくBも。後ろ3つの主語と動詞の一致では、通常、動詞に近いBに合わせます。
例：Either the boy or his friends are here. / Either his friends or the boy is here. 語順の交換によって動詞が変わります。I・youが含まれる場合も同様に、Either you or I am … / Either I or you are … とします。口語では不自然な一致を避けるため文を言い換えることもあります。
注意：Neither Ken nor Yui is here. は「二人ともここにいない」です。Either Ken or Yui is here. は「二人のどちらかがここにいる」で、意味が異なります。

元の英文とは意味が変わる指定問題。
間違えやすい3つのポイント
① bothとneitherはどちらも「二者」を表しますが、bothは両方肯定、neitherは両方否定です。② either / neither / not only … but alsoの主語一致は、今回のような複合主語の場合、直近の名詞で判断します。③ 実際の英作文では「Neither I nor you am …」のようなぎこちない表現を避け、「You and I are not …」など明確な形に書き換える方法もあります。

追加10問の解答と根拠
- are — 最も動詞に近いthe studentsが複数です。
- was — 動詞に近いthe teacherが単数。意味は両方とも欠席しなかった、です。
- open — both A and Bは通常複数主語。一般現在でopenを使います。
- like — 後半のhis sistersが複数なのでlikeです。
- am — 直近のIに合わせます。自然な会話ではMy sister or I will be responsible.のような言い換えもできます。
- are — youに対するbe動詞はareです。
- am — 文法上はIに一致してamです。会話ではYou are not ready, and neither am I.などに直すと自然です。
- was — 単数the coachが動詞の近くにあるためwasです。
- help — readingとwritingという2つの活動をboth … andで結びます。
- belong — 動詞に近いthose notebooksが複数です。
校閲上の注意：either … or／neither … nor／not only … but also の動詞一致は、この教材では基本として直近の主語に合わせています。ただし日常英語では特にI・youが絡む語順が不自然になる場合があり、意味が明確な主語に言い換えた方が自然です。Cambridge Dictionaryのneitherに関する文法解説も参考にしてください。
復習の進め方
まず1〜16で一致を確認し、17〜28で誤答の原因を説明してください。次に29〜36を日本語だけ見て書き直します。最後に37〜40で肯定と否定の意味差を確認し、間違えた設問だけ翌日に再テストしましょう。

よくある質問
both A and Bの後ろは必ず複数形ですか？
AとBが別々のもの・人物である通常のケースでは複数扱いです。文脈に特殊なまとまりの解釈がある場合は個別に確認します。
neither A nor Bの後ろは必ず単数ですか？
いいえ。Neither my brother nor my sisters are here. のように、動詞に近い主語が複数なら複数形を使います。
not only … but alsoではどちらを強調しますか？
AだけでなくBも、と情報を加える表現です。意味上Bに焦点が置かれることが多く、主語一致も近いBに合わせます。
