NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Stage3で、英語の説明書や利用ルールを読むとき、if・unless・only if・by・within・must not・mayの違いを正しく判断できますか。学校の定期テストでは、本文の一文を訳せても「この条件なら利用できる？」「いつまでに申し込む？」という設問で失点することがあります。慶英会では独自の英語規則文4題と36問・全解答・判断根拠を用意しました。

例えば「A student may use the room only if two students attend.」は、2人来れば必ず使えるという保証ではありません。2人以上は必要条件ですが、予約・空き・その他の規則も必要になる場合があります。逆に「unless」以下は、通常の規則を変える例外条件であることが多いので、必ず前後をセットで読みましょう。

解き方の4ステップ

• ①利用する主体を確認する：individual / group / teacher / borrower / editor。
• ②数値条件を拾う：人数・時刻・長さ・語数を、上限と下限に分ける。
• ③否定と例外を拾う：not allowed / only / unless / if / even ifを囲む。
• ④設問の人物を条件に当てはめる：必要条件に合致しても確定とは限らない。本文にない許可は推測しない。

第1題｜放課後アートルームの予約規則

Paragraph 1. The art room is open after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Only groups of three to five students may reserve a table. Groups must send a booking form to the art teacher by noon on the previous school day. Sending a form does not guarantee a place; the teacher will reply with a confirmation message.

Paragraph 2. Students may use colored pencils and watercolor paints. Spray paint and permanent markers are not allowed. Students should bring their own paper unless the teacher has announced a special materials session. During such a session, the school will provide paper at no cost. Everyone must clean the table and return the supplies before leaving.

Paragraph 3. If a group can no longer attend, it should cancel at least one school day before its session. A group that arrives without a confirmation message must wait until the teacher checks whether there is space. The room is closed on school holidays even if they fall on Tuesday or Thursday.

第2題｜理科器具の校内貸出手続き

Paragraph 1. Students may borrow a digital thermometer or a small light meter for school projects. The Science Desk is open from 12:20 to 12:50 p.m. on school days. A student must show a school ID and complete a loan card before receiving any equipment. Equipment may be used on campus only, unless a science teacher gives written permission for an off-campus investigation.

Paragraph 2. The normal loan lasts for two school days. Borrowers must return equipment by 12:50 p.m. on the final day. If the desk is closed for an announced school event, the return deadline moves to the next school day. Students should not leave devices outside the room after closing because the equipment might be damaged or lost.

Paragraph 3. If a device stops working, students must stop using it and tell the Science Desk. They must not attempt to open or repair the device themselves. The desk will check the equipment and explain whether another one is available. A student who needs an extension should request it before the original return deadline; extensions are not automatic.

第3題｜学校オンライン新聞の投稿条件

Paragraph 1. The school online newspaper welcomes articles about student activities. Each submission must be written in English and contain between 200 and 350 words, not including the title. The submission period opens at 9:00 a.m. on November 1 and closes at 5:00 p.m. on November 8. All dates and times in this example are fictional and are not announcements of real school events.

Paragraph 2. Students can submit an article without a photograph. If they choose to include a picture of a person, they must obtain written permission from the person and follow the school media policy. Images copied from websites must not be used without an appropriate license or permission. Articles should not include private contact information about students.

Paragraph 3. Submitting an article does not mean it will be published. Editors may ask for changes to improve clarity or accuracy. Authors should reply within three school days of receiving a revision request. If a student does not respond, editors may postpone publication. The editorial team publishes approved articles after a final check; no fixed publication date is promised.

第4題｜学校図書館のグループ学習室

Paragraph 1. The library’s group study room can be booked for 40-minute sessions. The room holds up to six students. At least two students must attend, because single students can use the regular reading area. Reservations open seven calendar days before a session. A student may hold only one active reservation at a time.

Paragraph 2. Food is not allowed, but drinking water in a closed bottle is permitted. Groups may talk quietly as long as they do not disturb library users outside the room. Students should return the chairs to their original positions and erase any writing from the whiteboard when the session ends.

Paragraph 3. Groups must arrive within the first ten minutes of their session. After ten minutes, the library may offer the room to another waiting group. If someone in the group cannot attend, the reservation may still be used only if at least two students arrive. During examination week, the library may shorten the sessions. Students should check the latest notice before leaving home.

解答を丸暗記するだけでなく、規則の条件を自分で変更して考えてください。例えば「2人なら利用可」という規則を「少なくとも3人」に変え、2人・3人・6人が来る場合の判断を英語で説明すると、数字と条件を正確に処理できます。なお、変更した仮想ルールは元の英文とは別の練習です。

よくある質問

Q. unlessとif notはいつも同じですか？

多くの場合に「〜しない限り」と「もし〜しなければ」は対応しますが、実際の規則では文脈・例外の範囲が重要です。単純な置換より、通常ルールと例外条件を表にして判断してください。

Q. only ifの条件を満たせば、必ず許可されますか？

いいえ。only ifは必要条件を示しますが、ほかに空き状況・承認・安全確認が必要なことがあります。第1題の「フォーム提出」と「先生の確認返信」の違いを見直しましょう。

Q. Stage3にこの4題と同じ本文は収録されていますか？

収録されていません。出版社の教材には実用的な英文も含まれますが、ここで紹介した4つの学校内規則と36問は慶英会が独自制作した練習です。教科書・Workbook・学校配布資料の複製ではありません。

Q. 英語の文法は分かるのに選択肢を間違えます。
