what to doとhow to do itの違いを30秒で整理

what to doにはitを付けない

I don’t know what to do.ではwhatがdoの目的語になっています。そのためwhat to do itと書くと目的語が重複します。一方、I don’t know how to do it.ではhowは「方法」を示す副詞的な語なので、通常はdoの対象となるitが必要です。I don’t know how to use this app.ならuseの目的語がthis appとなるためitを追加しません。

where toとwhen toは場所・時間の答えを想像する

Where should we meet? → We don’t know where to meet.／When should we leave? → We don’t know when to leave. と考えます。日本語の「どこで」「いつ」に対応する情報を先に特定すると、whenとwhereの取り違えが減ります。toの後は原形meet／leaveであり、to meetingやto leavingにはしません。

疑問詞＋toと間接疑問文は同じ形ではない

Do you know where to go?は疑問詞＋to不定詞、Do you know where we should go?は間接疑問の節を用いた英文です。意味が近くなる場面はありますが、後者は主語weと助動詞shouldを含む節です。疑問詞＋toは文脈上、誰が行動するかが自然に理解できる場合に用いられます。意味があいまいな場合には、主語と動詞を含む節で明示する方が適切です。

why to doは一般的な基本形として暗記しない

中学生が学ぶ「疑問詞＋to不定詞」はwhat・how・where・when・which・whoなどが中心です。why to doは一般的な疑問詞＋toの練習として機械的に作るのではなく、why we should do it、why it is important to do itのように理由を表す節を用いることを優先します。

A. doが他動詞として目的語を必要とする場合はitやthe taskなどが要ります。一方、文脈や動詞の用法によって異なるため、how to use this appのように具体的な目的語があればitを追加しません。

Q. Do you know where to goとDo you know where we should goはどちらも正しいですか。
