結論:NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage 2の助動詞では、should(助言)、had better(悪い結果を避けるための強めの助言)、must/have to(義務)、mustn’t(禁止)、don’t have to(義務なし)を区別することが重要です。You’d better check the deadline.

この記事はLesson2のhave toや助動詞の発展としてshould・had better・ought toを比較します。

  • should:You should ask the teacher.(確認した方がよい)
  • had better:You’d better leave now, or you may miss the train.(警告を含む助言)
  • must/have to:Visitors must follow the school rules.(義務)
  • must not:You mustn’t enter the staff room.(禁止)
  • do not have to:You don’t have to bring a notebook.(義務なし)
  • ought to:You ought to check the sources.(発展的な助言)

had betterの語順:had better+原形、否定はhad better not

You had better check the date. You’d better not copy the password. had better to check、had better don’t checkは標準的な語順ではありません。

mustn’tとdon’t have toを同じにしない

You mustn’t take photographs. You don’t have to take photographs.

At a fictional science club, students prepared an exhibition for visitors. The teacher explained that all visitors must follow the safety rules and must wear protective glasses during demonstrations. No one was allowed to touch unfamiliar equipment. These statements were official rules, not merely advice about what would be useful.

Hana wanted to prepare the reception desk. Ken told her, ‘You should check the room schedule before the event.’ He was giving a friendly suggestion. Then he saw that the printing deadline was in one hour. ‘You’d better send the posters now,’ he said, ‘or the printing team may not finish on time.’ The second statement carried a warning about a possible consequence.

Before rehearsal, the teacher explained that the volunteers did not have to bring pens, because the school had provided enough. A student incorrectly wrote, ‘You mustn’t bring a pen.’ The teacher corrected the notice: not having an obligation to bring something does not mean that bringing it is forbidden.

After the exhibition, volunteers discussed their experiences. Several visitors said the guide was clear, but the class did not measure any improvement in English test scores. The final report distinguished what the rules required, what the students recommended, and what results had actually been observed.

  • Q33. What did visitors have to wear during demonstrations?
  • Q34. What were visitors forbidden to touch?
  • Q35. What did Ken first suggest Hana check?
  • Q36. Why did he later use ‘had better’?
  • Q37. Did volunteers have to bring pens?
  • Q38. Why was ‘You mustn’t bring a pen’ wrong?
  • Q39. Were all visitors’ learning gains measured?
  • Q40. Which three kinds of information were separated in the report?
