結論:NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage 2 Lesson 2で失点が多いのは、mustn’t(禁止)とdon’t have to(義務なし)をどちらも『〜しなくてよい』と覚えることです。You mustn’t enter. You don’t have to enter.

  • You must not enter.
  • You don’t have to enter. →
  • You have to wear gloves. →
  • You should ask a teacher. →
  • Shall I help you?
  • Shall we start? →

mustn’tとdon’t have toは否定するものが違う

don’t have to You don’t have to wear a uniform. You mustn’t wear a uniform.

must/have to/shouldの強さを一律に決めない

Shall IとShall weの違い

Shall I carry the box? Shall we carry the box together?

Before the school science fair, Ms. Sato sent a short message to the volunteers. All helpers had to arrive by 8:30 a.m. on Saturday because the rooms needed to be prepared before visitors came. They had to wear comfortable shoes, but they did not have to bring scissors, markers, or tape. The school would provide those materials. The message included two safety rules. Students must not touch broken electrical equipment, and visitors were not allowed to enter the equipment room without a teacher. Students were welcome to bring water bottles, but doing so was optional. Ms. Sato said that anyone who felt unwell should tell an adult immediately. On Friday, Ken asked his teacher, ‘Do I have to stay until the end?’ The teacher answered, ‘No, you don’t. You may leave at noon if you tell me before the event.’ Ken was relieved because he had a family appointment. His friend Yui offered, ‘Shall I prepare your table after you leave?’ Ken thanked her, but the teacher reminded them that another volunteer had already been assigned to that job. When the volunteers met on Saturday, they read the rules aloud. One student mistakenly said, ‘We mustn’t bring scissors,’ but Ms. Sato corrected him: ‘You don’t have to bring them; that is different from a ban.’ The group made a small poster to help visitors understand the difference between safety rules, necessary actions, and optional choices.

  • Q33. At what time must volunteers arrive?
  • Q34. Do volunteers have to bring scissors?
  • Q35. What equipment must students not touch?
  • Q36. Who must accompany visitors into the equipment room?
  • Q37. Is bringing a water bottle compulsory?
  • Q38. Why can Ken leave at noon?
  • Q39. What did Yui offer to do?
  • Q40. Why was ‘We mustn’t bring scissors’ incorrect?
