- Will you check the map? →
- Could you check the map, please? →
- Shall I check the map? →
- Shall we check the map? →
- May I check the map? →
Could you …?
Could you open the door? Sorry, I can’t right now.
No, you don’t と No, you mustn’tは意味が異なる
Do I have to bring a notebook? — No, you don’t. May I take photographs? — No, you mustn’t.
Let’sとShall weの提案
Let’s start. とShall we start? Shall I start?

At a fictional middle school, volunteers prepared an English information desk for new students. Hana asked Ken, ‘Could you check the room numbers on this map?’ Ken agreed and said he would compare them with the school’s official schedule. Yui noticed a heavy box near the door and offered, ‘Shall I carry the box for you?’ Hana thanked her, but said that a teacher needed to supervise moving the box. Before visitors entered, one volunteer asked, ‘May I take photographs in this room?’ The teacher explained that photographs of students required permission and that some parts of the school did not allow photography. He also said that the information desk volunteers did not have to bring their own pens, because the school had prepared enough pens for everyone. Bringing a personal pen was optional, not forbidden. At the beginning of the event, Ken suggested, ‘Shall we check the directions together one more time?’ The volunteers agreed. A younger student then asked, ‘May I use this map?’ The volunteer said yes and explained how to find the library. Another student asked, ‘Will you show me where the science room is?’ The volunteer answered by pointing to the correct room on the approved map. After the event, the council reviewed its work. Eleven students had asked questions, but the group had not measured how many visitors had learned the building layout without assistance. The members wrote about the requests, offers, permissions, and rules that appeared in their conversations. They learned that speaking politely is important, but choosing the correct type of question is just as important.
- Q33. What did Hana ask Ken to check?
- Q34. What did Yui offer to do?
- Q35. Why was the box not moved immediately?
- Q36. What did the volunteer ask about taking photographs?
- Q37. Did volunteers have to bring their own pens?
- Q38. What did Ken suggest before the event?
- Q39. What did the younger student ask permission to use?
- Q40. How many students asked questions, and did that prove everyone learned the layout?
