Observation: Tap A produced six liters in one minute.(Aの1分の水量は6リットル)。Comparison: That was two liters more than Tap B.(Bより2リットル多い)。Limit: We did not measure daily use.(1日の使用量は測っていない)。Action: We will ask school staff to review the taps.(職員へ確認を依頼する)。

例えば17 out of 28は「28人中17人」で、17 out of 32とは分母が異なります。

At fictional Willow School, a class compared water coming from two classroom taps for one minute each. With the same measuring container, Tap A produced six liters and Tap B produced four liters. The teacher asked students to write down the observations, not to guess why the taps were different. The class tested each tap only once, so the results did not show how much water the whole school used in a day. Students suggested asking staff to check whether any taps needed maintenance. They did not repair the taps themselves. The class also discussed why clean water matters for drinking and handwashing. Everyone agreed that saving water should not mean skipping necessary hygiene. The teacher explained that the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 concerns safe water and sanitation. The two amounts in this story were invented for English practice, not taken from a real water survey.

In a fictional garden project, students collected rainwater in three containers placed under an approved outdoor collection system. After a rainy day, Container A held twelve liters, B held eighteen and C held fifteen. The total was forty-five liters. The teacher permitted the collected water to be used for ornamental plants after checking the school’s rules. The water was not tested for drinking, so no one claimed it was safe to drink. On the next day, the class used twenty liters for the garden and recorded twenty-five liters remaining. The students did not know whether more rain would fall later in the week. They planned to write a report with the date, unit and intended use. One student suggested installing a larger system, but the school had not approved that proposal. The story and all measurements are invented.

A fictional school invited thirty-two students to answer a short survey about refilling reusable bottles. Twenty-eight students replied. Of these respondents, seventeen said they usually brought reusable bottles, while eleven said they did not. Four invited students did not reply, so their habits were unknown. The teacher explained that the survey measured what students reported, not how much plastic waste the school had actually reduced. A student suggested that the school should add another refill station. The proposal would need a check of space, maintenance and cost before any decision. The school had not ordered a station or chosen a date. Students prepared an English poster that said, ‘Seventeen of the twenty-eight respondents reported using reusable bottles.’ They avoided saying, ‘Most students in the entire school do this,’ because the respondents were not everyone.

For an imaginary English presentation, four students studied Sustainable Development Goal 6. Their teacher introduced a real United Nations description: the goal concerns access to clean water and sanitation. The students then created a fictional example of a community center. Its notice said that the drinking-water point was open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, while the handwashing area was open until 5:00 p.m. Staff checked the water supply each morning. The notice did not say that every water source outside the center was safe. One student wrote, ‘The center solves all water problems in the town.’ The group revised this statement because the fictional notice did not support it. They wrote instead, ‘The center offers a drinking-water point during the listed hours.’ They would cite the UN for the goal’s definition, not for the invented center schedule.

I think schools should check how water is used. Measuring water at different times can help us find questions that need further investigation. For example, our fictional class compared two taps for one minute. However, those measurements cannot show the total daily water use, so we need more reliable data before making a larger claim.
