結論:NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage 2 Lesson 8の再帰代名詞は、myself/yourself/himself/herself/ourselves/themselvesの形だけでなく、by myself(一人で・人の助けなし)/for myself(自分のため)/I myself(私自身が)の意味の違いを理解します。さらにeach other/one another(互いに)は再帰代名詞ではなく相互関係を表す表現です。

myself/by myself/for myselfを比較する

  • I myself checked the schedule. →
  • I checked the schedule by myself. →
  • I printed a copy for myself. →
  • I introduced myself. →
  • Ken and Yui helped each other.

by myselfとfor myselfは交換できない

I cooked dinner by myself. I cooked dinner for myself.

each otherとthemselvesの違い

The two students helped each other. The two students helped themselves.

We enjoyed ourselves at the school festival.

At a fictional middle school, four students prepared an English welcome event. Hana and Ken introduced themselves to the visitors before giving a tour. They then helped each other check the room numbers. The teacher explained that ‘introduce themselves’ described each student presenting their own name, while ‘help each other’ described two people giving support to one another.

Yui made a poster by herself because the other volunteers were busy. She said she had drawn and checked the words without help, but she did not say that the design was the best in the school. Another student bought a notebook for himself to use during the event. The first phrase described how work was done, while the second described who would benefit from a purchase.

Before the visitors arrived, the volunteers reminded themselves to review the school rules. They then listened to one another’s short explanations. Some students were nervous, but they encouraged each other. During a break, a volunteer said, ‘I enjoyed myself at the practice session,’ meaning that the experience had been pleasant.

After the event, the group reported that some visitors had enjoyed the tour. It did not claim the visitors had improved their English scores, because the group had not carried out a test. The teacher asked each volunteer to identify which English sentences expressed a reflexive action, which described an action done independently, and which expressed a mutual relationship.

  • Q33. What did Hana and Ken do before the tour?
  • Q34. What did Hana and Ken help each other check?
  • Q35. Who made a poster without help?
  • Q36. What did another student buy for himself?
  • Q37. What did the volunteers remind themselves to do?
  • Q38. What did the volunteers listen to?
  • Q39. What did ‘I enjoyed myself’ mean in the story?
  • Q40. Did the event prove that visitors’ English scores had increased?
